Dometic fridge temperature

A few things didn’t last as long as I expected in our van’s fridge (Dometic RML 9435) and I put a fridge thermometer in overnight to check what was going on and repeated with a couple of different cooling settings. Temperature was 7 degrees pretty much whatever I set rather than the 4 degrees fridges are supposed to be.

If it was my kitchen fridge I’d have a moan at someone but does anyone know if van fridges are typically just not as good?

Can live with it, if that’s how it is, but if it’s faulty I need to do something about it sharpish while it’s under warranty.

Thanks

mine runs significantly colder on gas than on either 12v or 220v

There are many threads on this subject, usually starting in the summer, when the ambient temperatures rise.
Temperature in the fridge varies in so many ways, for so many reasons.
Try reading through the most recent ones, and you'll hopefully get the picture.
By sheer coincidence, we've just crossed the French / Spanish border and are planning to stay a couple of nights on a most spectacular hilltop, overlooking San Sebastian. The fridge vents are in the full sun, its 31, in the shade.
.

I've just sat down after removing the fridge vents, stashing them away carefully, they're fragile.
Good luck with your studies.

Apologies: I found lots about broken fridges, but not any about just being a bit warm. Will hunt harder... thanks

A good method to improve efficiency is the use of forced ventilation, typically done by installing 12v computer fans behind the top grille to draw the warm air out of the fridge installation.

You will find threads on the site that discuss this at length.

I have a Waeco 3/way portable fridge, in the handbook it states.....This fridge is guaranteed to work at 20-25 degrees below ambient.

So, if the temperature is in the mid 30s, the fridge interior is going to show 7-10deg.

Maybe it's the same with Dometic, but they fail to point this out.

Just think of it as a cool larder

Rather than a proper fridge..

Saying that our freezer works very well so maybe put suitable fresh meat in to freeze to extend its storage life.
We like sausages (good) and they last quite well
Put butter/margarine/spread in the freezer for say the afternoon.
OR find one that keeps firm better

Cheese and cold meats etc are fine.
If possible overnight suitably orientated (Sun and wind)

Extra ventilation as suggested or simply take the vents off when stood but be careful with the fixing "screws"

Like keeping the charge on your LB maintained...Tesco advert "Every Little Helps"
(same goes for fresh water grey water etc)
No need to compromise of living standards just be aware

I have a fridge thermometer, it will show 6 or 7 deg but if I switch the fans on to help the cooling it drops to 2deg, the fins inside the back of the fridge have a light coating of ice on them

The main thing is fridges are ment to work at 2c ,above 6 bugs start to grow, most gas fridges are just coolers for holding food a day or so,buy fresh and eat is best.

7c is just plain unacceptable, Im diabetic and insulin needs to be stored in a fridge (below 5c) the fridge in my Nuevo has no problems staying below 5c even when its 30c outside, it will even keep icecream solid for a few days if its in the freezer compartment

The joys of absorbtion cycle fridges.... They are Temperamental at best....
A good one is great and wont be fussy about level, wind direction or temperature...
A bad one will drive you spare....
Sadly buying a new model is, no guarantee of success either (I've come accross folks with issues with brand new units not performing)

Want reliable cooling (pretty much regardless on environmental conditions)
Go compressor type....

We too carry insulin aboard.
I've just checked on the Diabetes U.K. Site.
It confirmed the advice that we've been adhering to ;
Store at room temperature...under 25 degrees.
.

Avoid low temperatures, it makes injection difficult.
.
Never let it freeze.
We keep ours in the gas locker, normally, the evaporation of the gas acts like a weak fridge.
Yesterday, we were parked up in 28 degrees. I'd just removed the fridge vents, to help the cooling fan and brought the insulin into the fridge.
When I logged on here, this thread had just started... Coincidence, Physic , or what?

Mine (humalog) says on the box that "once opened the pen being used may be stored at room temp FOR UP TO 4WEEKS after 4 weeks discard otherwise store in refrigerator between 2 and 8c"

As I am often away for longer (sometimes much longer) than 4 weeks a reliable refrigerator is essential

I've never found a caravan fridge as good as a home one especially in very hot temperature.I do think they work better on electric which isn't good for wild camping or Aires!

Obviously ensure your fridge is as level as possible.
We have a thetford fridge that works best when level, particularly n/s to o/s.
