DIY Laptop repairs

I would tend to agree but could be a dodgy driver or something is trying to use a screen resolution or refresh rate that the laptop does not support, Whats the make?

One thing I can think of quickly tho is that perhaps you have not been pressing the [fn] and F4 keys as this swops the monitor output between monitor and laptop screen. If you have been dual screening with an older laptop they do not automatically sort themselves back out to the correct screen

I think it's something happening on the motherboard, I tried switching to see if I could get it onto the external monitor but won't do anything. When I had a problem before it would at least show something while booting but this has no display at all on the external or it's own screen. It's quite a few years old & not a good make anyway, an Advent 6411. The battery died years ago & I have to run it off the power supply so it's not much use for being portable so I might just have to take the hard disk out & find a way of getting the stuff off it. I think Maplins have some sort of adapter that you can plug into a laptop hard disk.

Yes I think you are right its the motherboard, something to do with the graphics chip. You maybe able to get inside and ensure that everything is 'seated' properly and there are not any obviously damaged or loose wires / bits but I would not hold out much hope.

If it is actually booting up and you have a home network you maybe able to use a 'remote desktop connection' if you have enabled remote access. My Computer / Properties / enable remote access.

At work we always install VNC so that we can access any pc on the network. Also if you are not worried about security you can share C:\documents and settings and then if you need to you can access the files. of course not a lot of help now :)

A good solution would be to buy a USB harddrive carriage then you have a backup device that can be used as you want.

good luck

You can get them on Ebay as well, I have a couple in my desk drawer. One is a 2.5 to 3.5 adaptor which allows you to put a laptop drive into a desktop, and the other is an IDE to USB adaptor which will work with either 2.5 or 3.5 drives.
This will, as you may have guessed, let you use a "normal" IDE HDD as a USB drive.
