Diesel in the fresh water tank!

I wouldn't be to concerned about the water tank several fills and drains should have cleared it if the tank has a overflow allowing it to over fill for a while should help as diesel floats on top of water and as soon as they realised their mistake they probably never pumped it thru the system. Smell and taste will tell you if more flushing is still needed
Depends if you're buying or selling.

If someone is honest enough to tell you about it, it would put my mind at rest as far as other possible problems are concerned.

I would not bother trying to clean the system with milton. I doubt it would have much effect on diesel as it is used only to kill germs. A good flush of any system that has been left standing with fresh water would seem sensible.

If the setup is anything like mine the tank has a large inspection hatch you could use to see what has happened inside the tank.
But yes, it is a bargaining chip although often these sort of sales are at bargain prices anyway.

To be honest I won't use it has a bargaining chip because if I get it much cheaper than she's asking I would feel like I was taking advantage of her situation and I hope that if anything happened to me no one would take advantage of Diane.Regards, Del
Personally I'd feel the same way about taking advantage of a easily cured fault lets hope the van suits you when you view

Had you bought this from any other source you would never have known. Also we have never drunk water from the tank in any van over 10 years. It would not put me off if it seemed fine now.

My mate told me that his neighbour was selling a 54 plate Dethleffs A Class motorhome, he wasn't sure which model and she is selling it because her husband passed away last year and it's not being used. It's based on the Merc 2.5TD which looking on Google people seem to like and rate very highly. So I ask if he can arrange for me to see it, she's away for Christmas and I'm at Hereford for the New Year so it will be early in January before I can go over, but during the course of conversation he said that about 3 years ago her husband had accidently put diesel in the fresh water tank! He said they had had it flushed and had used it since then but somehow this is putting me off, would you buy it? If so what would you do to make sure the fresh water tank was suitable to use for fresh water? Changing all the pipework and tank would probably make the overall price expensive rather than a bargain.

Regards,

Del
If it is on a 54 plate it will be the 2.7 5 cylinder engine 160bhp these are superb engines it is just a shame merc stopped fitting those engines, they have lots of torque I am sure you will be very pleased with it.

The universal cleaner could be used filled in the tank then driven around for a few hours left to stand overnight the flushed out with fresh water.
The universal cleaner is Cola-not the 'good stuff' but,as Peter Kay says-'rola cola' cheap own brand stuff.

I wouldn't let it worry me at all. If the water still tastes odd, there are plenty of ways to rinse it out, but I doubt that will be necessary.

Replacing the pipes and the tank is totally stupid idea: they are all made of plastic - which is more or less solidified diesel in any case.

Reading the above is enough to convince me to do the totally stupid route But still only use the tank water for washing and washing up.

I use 25L containers which I don't have any hesitation about drinking from.
I think if I had one of these permanently fitted 100L odd underslung tanks I would still use it for drinking water, however would fit an inline water filter to a seperate tap, just like you see in many kitchens with mains water.

Years back folk here drank from wells in which they kept a few trout in to keep water clean,i often wondered where the trout poo went.:scared::lol-053::lol-053::lol-053:

When I travel from Scotland too England I fill my tank so that I don’t have too put any of that muck they call water in and if I do I sterilise when I get home. So that’s why you’ll see me drinking beer a lot I’m only conserving water for the family 🍺😜

I think your on to something there Trev, maybe dropping a few goldfish into the tank would be more appropriate or even them fish that clean up the Dead skin off your feet:lol-053:

Not an expert on a vast range of subjects, so no comments from me about them. But I do know a lot about some things.

You, on the other hand, seem singularly lacking in the ability to share expertise.

I knew you’d bite, could’ve put money on it. While we’re on the subject of not sharing expertise, I’ll remind you of your comments earlier, about “ Not sharing with the likes of me”.
Lol.
