Dealer blaming DVLA

My younger brother recently ordered a brand new motorhome. When he went to collect it last week they tried to palm him off with an ex-demo model!

He was having none of it. When he ordered he had also ordered quite a few extras which they had now fitted to the ex-demo. They are now rushing to transfer all of the extras to the new vehicle in time for his holiday (which he has had to postpone) or he will cancel the order altogether.

Your brother probably won’t want to, but it’s a shame he can’t name and shame on here. Because if they’ve done it to one, they’ll do it to another.

He isn't a member on here (yet) and I don't want to name and shame as I don't want to cause any further problems for him getting his motorhome.

We are buying a new motorhome from a dealer. We were due to collect it on Wednesday 23 July but shortly before the dealer said that we couldn’t collect as the DVLA had rejected the registration documents. They blamed the DVLA changing the process without informing them. We currently are have no new date to collect. Has anyone else had a similar problem with a dealer? Or are we right to be suspicious? Not naming the dealer.

I would be suspicious of the dealer. They say the DVLA have changed their procedure which suggests an admin cock up and that they have simply got the form filling wrong. Ask them for a copy of their submission, if they haven’t kept a copy that is the first sign of incompetence because common sense dictates keeping proof of submission.

I tried to order a towbar but the reg kept getting rejected phoned DVLA and they had no record of my van. They never registered the Van. Its 6 months older on log book from receipt and other paperwork one of a long list of problems with this company who have went bust twice and still going using same name bunch of cowboys.

How could you get tax and insurance if it wasn't registered?

I gave the dealer a private plate and insurance a week before I had to pick van up and the van was insured under that plate as far as I was concerned the van was Taxed as well through the dealer when he was supposed to register it. When I picked the van up it had my private plate made up and fitted to the van you don’t expect that type of incompetence when spending 100k. But hey Ho there’s monkeys in every profession.

A good dealer would not handover the vehicle or let you drive off the forecourt before the registration is showing on the DVLA system. Some dealers even say there is a period of grace while the registration process is completed but this concession was removed many years ago.

The op hasn’t come back with enough info, it could be a simple case of a converter converting a commercial van and the DVLA deciding the body type is Van with windows rather than a Motor Caravan!
Especially if the contract stipulates the vehicle will be registered as a motor caravan.

Or maybe there’s an issue over the weight, or the emmisions.

If it is a commercial van conversion then whilst going to inspect it the other thing I would strongly recommend is to get it weighed to ensure it has the minimum payload stipulated in the contract.

Our car was new last year, no reg at the time, AA insured it and it was taxed, they just liaised with the dealer, I suppose the VIN is enough.

Not legal as some form of regestered plate required so police or street cams for speeding/parking ofences can relay info back to dvla or police.

This company have had their problems Wully.
I have heard some customers are not happy with their warranty works.
I met a guy on a campsite who had bought an Adria and was not a happy chappy.
I contacted them about an Adria 640 SLB PVC when looking for a new van.
I was told I would get a call back, that was over three years ago, still waiting for the phone call.

Van handed over, 10 days late but very pleased with it. The dealer still maintains that DVLA moved the goalposts, but what do I know?

I’d be checking that van very carefully, obviously the dealer may be telling the truth, but I’d not be taking that for granted.
