Dealer blaming DVLA

We are buying a new motorhome from a dealer. We were due to collect it on Wednesday 23 July but shortly before the dealer said that we couldn’t collect as the DVLA had rejected the registration documents. They blamed the DVLA changing the process without informing them. We currently are have no new date to collect. Has anyone else had a similar problem with a dealer? Or are we right to be suspicious? Not naming the dealer.

SWMBO had a job as a car Sales person with a Ford main dealer.
She sold a brand new car and arranged a collection date.
The day before handover a mechanic took it out for a road test and on his return misjudged the entrance and damaged the entire left hand side.
Rather than get a replacement the dealer principle decided it would be repaired and told her to make something up to keep the customer happy for two weeks.

Two weeks later the unsuspecting customer got the repaired car, SMBO got her commission and the dealer got her resignation.

I bought my van new from BC motorhomes Ayr. Took delivery of the van in march went off to France for a holiday straight away then used the van for six months. I tried to order a towbar but the reg kept getting rejected phoned DVLA and they had no record of my van. They never registered the Van. Its 6 months older on log book from receipt and other paperwork one of a long list of problems with this company who have went bust twice and still going using same name bunch of cowboys.

You are by law allowed to sell a car as new with light repaired damage, when i worked in n johnson main toyota dealer a customer returned a car and took them to court, he lost as the law stood with the garage, me id punch there lights out if it happened to me, mind you i would never buy new and loose half price once you leave the door.

You NEED to go and look at that van.

It may be that theres a genuine reason for the delay, that may be connected with DVLA and it may be were all cynical BUT your default position should be look after your best interests.

Recently I have had major problems with DVLA registering classic cars, they are completely unreliable, and often change their requirements overnight. I wouldnt be surprised if the dealer is telling the truth, but you need to get the full story.

My younger brother recently ordered a brand new motorhome. When he went to collect it last week they tried to palm him off with an ex-demo model!

He was having none of it. When he ordered he had also ordered quite a few extras which they had now fitted to the ex-demo. They are now rushing to transfer all of the extras to the new vehicle in time for his holiday (which he has had to postpone) or he will cancel the order altogether.

A mate had a spray shop ( I can't name him ) and all new mercedes cars in 80s, 90s and 00s used to go straight to him for repairs. Then onwards to the dealer .
Not quiet the same thing but he had delays on repairs and not sure what the dealers said to customers.

So basically crooks. Did they tell him or did he just notice it.

It’s just another reason why I wouldn’t trust any vehicle dealer, ever, in any circumstances. They will say and do anything in order to make that sale.

The best advice is to assume that everything uttered is false. That’s a general statement, not relating to this issue discussed here, which is likely to be a simple error.

True, although certain damage repairs should be declared. Most people won’t realise just how many brand new cars are damaged and repaired before sale. However, it’s different to damage after the sale has gone through, which should definitely be declared.

I dont think that’s the issue here though, I suspect it’s an admin cock up. A quick visit would verify that.

When Liz and I have been on test drives, cars and vans, sometimes someone has to go with you and I hate that as I have to stop, turn round and say to them, I am on a test drive, please be quiet so I can concentrate on what I am doing, Liz says I am rude but I think it is they who are rude.

With many yeasrs in the trade i can spot 99% of all repairs within a few mins walkaround, if the paint is to flat on the surface rather than a light weave thats the telltail, even for the best repair shops.
Carry a magnet with you and run it over panels, it will show up any fillers. (y)

He, or rather his wife noticed that it was the demo vehicle they had viewed before ordering a brand new one.
