Dead satnavs - Snooper

Pro_nav

Hi,

I had problems charging my new sat nav while away last year.I emailed pro-nav and was told it will not charge while plugged into 12volt on the van but just hold the charge at the level it is at while plugged in.It only charges while plugged in but switched off a bit like a mobile phone.I have plugged it into my laptop switched off and it charges ok till I get a green light. It sounds a bit daft but thats what I was told and it works fine.

I'm on my fourth TomTom now but my "Live" service seems to be playing up now, which of course, isn't the fault of the service. They assure me that if I renew my subscription by paying them £50.00 all will be well. I cannot do the work I do effectively without satnav but for £34.99 I can put an app on my phone that offers more than TomTom live does. This makes me wonder whether the dedicated satnav device is now old technology. I remember pre satnav driving into towns, in a lorry, with a map on the steering wheel which isn't the safest driving method.

Thanks for the reassurances, I'll keep going with my Nuvi till it gives up then.

I like Garmins, this is the second Nuvi I've had (lost the first out walking) and I've found they often get me to places properly where friends with Tom Toms and Navmans (should that be Navmen?) have had problems.

Don't use a usb connection to charge it put it use a 12v supply to do that .This happened to mine the usb does not give enough power when its being used to keep it working . Hope that helps

Yay

Just been and plugged it back in the van, where it has a direct battery power feed, and all is well.

Thanks for the tip - just a pity I can't use it in the car as well, but you can't win 'em all.

I have never had a problem with charging anything with a USB lead, but I bought a cheapy lead which charges things a lot more slowly than the bona fide leads.

Happy bunny again :)

Snooper sorted - direct 12v feed.

Garmin sorted - 3 cheers to Fairytooth who fixed it for me.

For future reference if anyone else has the same problem, it was a corrupted SD card.

Thanks again.

I'd have to disagree - some usb micro leads i bought would not charge my phone. these cost 99p,

I bought some branded htc leads which are thicker (cost 1.49 incl. postage) and they worked a treat. You do need to pay attention to the quality of leads but like watchdog found - £75 is a rip off

what did we all do before sat navs .me for one used a map and still have one but use it little and have successfully navigated the UK since starting my driving career at 17 . which includes quite a few years as a delivery driver all over the country .i can find my way round this sceptered isle of ours quite well and if i do get confused trying to find a certain area i ask . as for petrol stations theirs one on most roads so no prob there. super markets well there not actual raireties ether easily found .sunday we were up in mexborough a place i havent been for years , and wanted to find a pets at home .anyway my daughter said she will check on her i phone thingy .by the time she had the directions i was pulling into the shopping complex .by just following the road signs i do admit to having one navman i think ,anyway bought it cheap of ebay ,just to try one out .it got me lost in london ,so i turned it off and used my own navigation system ,bus stops and signs .got to my destination dead easy. one thing i do use is aa route finder if i am unsure of a places location .look at it once and then set off usually get there OK . mind you i have spent the last 47 years or so traveling the uk

What did we do before we had the Radio , rthe mobile phone, the car ,the Telly ,the computer ,the motorhome , the wheel the list is endless but time and technology moves on , and we need to move on with it .
