Couple of problems

Hi, I've a couple of problems with my Compass Avantgarde 120 MH that I could do with some advice on: -

i) The infil strip one side of the van has come out of the ali moulding and is coming loose in other areas, what is the best way to ensure it stays put? Sikaflex? If so which grade of Sikaflex would be best suited to this application?

ii) My electric retractable step has just stopped retracting when the ignition is swithed on, can still operate on the switch, any ideas? Don't know if this is a relay problem - any idea where they are situated & which one is for this particular circuit?

Thanks

Pete

hi pete
i think the problem with your step will be that the micro switch on the under side of step will have stuck, dose it with some wd40 and work it with your finger should sort it out.

Thanks, I'll hunt out the micro switch & lubricate it.

Wilthebeast - Lubricated the micro switch with WD40 as you suggested and all is now well, step retracts when ignition is turned on.

Just the trim/infil to sort now!

Thanks

pete, I tried getting the infill back into the ali moulding trim, but didnt do too well,I found that the plastic strip had lost its elasticity and just would not run in correctly. If you look on ebay you can get some new infill ,you buy it by the metre, if you decide to replace the infill with new stuff, you will find that if you place the new plastic infill into a bucket of hot water you are able to run the infill quite easily using a piece of thin plastic or wood ( an old clothes peg ) into the ali, just make sure you purchase the correct infill strip as there are several variations and colours.:boat:

I was interested to see that you resolved the problem with steps not retracting. We have the same problem on our Hymer, but the resident mechanic has had a look, and cant see anything like a microswitch. What does this switch look like, and is it under the steps, or on the underside of the van near the steps? There may be a difference with different models, but he couldn't see anything obvious. Any more clues?

Thanks.

My step would operate on the switch but just would not retract when the ignition was switched on.

If you get your head under the van & look at the step you should see some kopex, (flexible conduit), if you follow that you should see the micro switch. Mine was towards the top of the step mechanism & was in a restricted position. I assume that the switch is closed when the step is retracted & should operate when the step is out but was stuck in until lubricated with WD40.

Your micro switch will most likely look like this one that is fitted to the steps on loads of motor homes, your may have lost the waterproof boot or it could be split and letting in water from the plunger that makes and breaks the circuit depending on how your model is wired, this is the most common fault with these type micro switches that we have with them at work. www.caravan-parts.org/.../img/19253_2856991i.jpg

They are quite small and normaly well tucked away so are easy to miss, You may have to get a bucket and brush to clean the step area as they can collect quite a bit of mud in the area the step is mounted.

Squibby.

I have contacted a seller on ebay who has agreed to send me a sample so that I can check its suitability before ordering, he mentioned that this trim can shrink over time in sunlight so maybe my assumption that Compass had stretched it a bit on application was false? There again, if it does shrink over time in sunlight then its the wrong material for the job!
