cooking rice in the van

Slightly off topic but thinking about "burnt bits " with my morning coffee, got me thinking that we do burn deliberately a "beurre noisette " is a common kitchen cheffy term the point at which butter burns gives it a colour and nutty taste, It is easy to get it wrong and burn to much. It is also the reason that oils are often added to the butter to stop it from colouring ( the oil withstands a higher temp so protects the butter.

One for VWalan and perhaps he left Doncaster too young to be aware but butterscotch originates from Doncaster a popular gift from days gone by at the races.

Butterscotch as nothing to do with Scotland but refers to scorched butter .!!! happy accident it seems to originate from the kitchens at Cusworth Hall about mile and a half from where Alan grew up. The sweet was made in the town by Parkinsons, but that came to an end when purchased by Callard and Bowser and production shifted dark side aka Lancashire.

Nevertheless burnt butter and only Yorkshire folk would have the audacity to sell it !!

my mum and dad helped one of their friends on a fruit and veg stall on donny market . going around to the cattle market was one of my favourite past times . came in usefull later on when buying cattle etc for the slaughter house.
mind i used to like all the market . the fish market was interesting , or going in the inside bit for the expensive clothes etc .
all good adventure when your only young .
i remember first seeing tamar bridge down here . my dad said he helped make the cables . he worked for british ropes for awhile .
donny was quite a interesting place and famous for its railway lines .
anyway wonder how harrow got on cooking the rice .

Yes got on fine with it but it wanted rinsing with boiling water when cooked.

The boil in a bag rice from asda works for me with no need to rinse.

Microwave rice is very handy, but its expensive for what it is.

;););)

i never rinse it . wine glass of rice ,two wine glass of water per person . boil two minutes . remove from heat wrap pot in a thick towel . come back twenty mins later already to eat.
i prefer pressure cooker but normal pan with a lid works . try it with no rinse its ok.
having it tonight again with mackeral. be in the pan in a few mins .

well that went down well. rice not rinsed . just two mins at pressure then left to de pressure .
mackeral fried in argan oil , threw in the peppers, tomato and onion . kept them seperate from the fish but same frying pan . decided no spice just plain cooking .
put rice on plate then fish and the veg . cheated and splashed a bit of tomato sauce on it . then down it goes .
think two fish was really too much but its gone .
cant beat fresh mackeral. not so many around this year . mmmmm.
followed by a nice dish of icecream and chopped banana .
