I know there has been a post similar but wanting to know the best for small (just a field) kind of sites. We like the wild camping and do that a lot but haven’t had great experiences outside of Scotland which is a little far for a weekend away. Just staying somewhere cheap and cheerful is what we are looking for but don’t want to join both cmc and ccc unnecessarily. Thanks in advance

Have you tried Cocos wild camp plenty of space dogs welcome and fire pits ok.

We have been members of the camping and caravan club for years and have made a lot of use of their small 5 pitch basic sites....

We tried the Camping and motorhome club BUT found their sites to be rather regimented and some of their wardens were a tad camp Kommandant like for us.

Many CL's and CS's aren't that fussed whether you are a member or not - having said that they may be more fussy in high season I suppose. Sometimes it's worth ringing them and just say, "look I'm not a member but...."

Not that I would condone such an action of course.

I would agree with this in regard to small sites, you probably wouldn't get on bigger sites without being a member unless it states members/non member prices.

May not be a lot between either clubs version of the small sites but where I suspect CCC will win out is in the extensive temporary holiday sites they do each year. Plus some CCC sites will let you pay a fee to use facilities without having to book a night

It is the case that the CMC have more small 5 van sites than the C&CC, however, distribution as you say is key.
Not knowing how much you wish to be on your own I may be wrong with offering my suggestion that the C&CC offer lots of weekend options with their district weekend meets and indeed the longer temporary holiday sites.
Obviously you are parked with other vans (potentially lots), however we use them as bases from which to explore and rarely get involved with the social events that might be on offer.
Give this aspect some consideration in your decision making.

CCC hands down better value.
And they have grass only pitches on most of their sites.
Also if over 60 you get a further 10% of almost all of their sites.
And they do some great offers.
Last year they had 40% of grass only pitches if you stayed three nights.
In sept we got three nights for £31 in the Oban/ Barcaldine site.
We were recently at their Dunbar site two nights for £42.

Smallholding at Brereton Heath [J15/J16 of M6 depending whether heding north or south]. £7 per night in 2023, very relaxed approach, relying on folk to behave sensibly, and only 150 metres walk from the wooded area and lake where you wander to you heart's content. Also an Ice Cream 'parlour' that does locally produced ice creams that are to die for ...
