CLEANING OF FRESH WATER STORAGE CONTAINERS.

I repeat from 10 & 4 years ago when this subject arose.

Hi,

When this topic came up several years ago I mentioned that we had spent six weeks in 2000 ish in the company of prof Basil Jarvis the foremost microbiologist this Country had at that time.

I asked him "how long is drinking water safe to drink from a purpose built food grade plastic tank".

His reply was " that providing the tank was flushed through yearly with milton or similar steroliser and that the water had come from a dependable source , potable, that it will be perfectly safe for several weeks.

This will not change the mind of anyone not happy with the thought of drinking from the main tank, but these are the facts.

Light is the catalyst for photosynthesis ie no light no growth.

I only flush my Motorhome’s system through once a year with a citric acid solution. We drink the water straight out of the onboard water tank and have yet to suffer any I’ll effects. I have used water from all over the UK and Europe including roadside springs in Portugal.
I think you’re most probably being a trifle over-cautious.

1 x 400g tub of Puriclean that i posted in #4 does 2 cleans ( 200g each time ) of my main water tank and pipes.

Approx £8 - £9 a year isn`t a fortune and i look on it as part of my regular maintenance costs.

Cheaper than that now Graham mate...

I use a tester similar to THIS and puriclean once a year. Apparently Milton can cause boiler corrosion as it is basically a weak bleach and is specifically discouraged by Truma.

I don't use anything. We have the tank water, a 25 litre carrier and three 5 litre bottles of water from Tesco's which I just refill all the time and drink from. The big carrier and three plastic bottles I can carry on the bike but I've never put anything in them. Doesn't the water have stuff in it anyway that kills nasties? The last set of 5 litre plastic bottles I got in France in 2017. I only binned them this trip because Michelle found some in Tesco with handles on them :D

I drop a tablet in every couple of weeks but we do use ours every weekend. We rarely drink the water as we are at shows but occasionally we drink squash with no alcohol which is rare with no problem.,😁

Graham, that listing is only for a 100g tub, i buy the 400g tubs then i just halve it ( 200g ) which does a tank full + pipes.

Also the listing says it`s for tabs / tablets were as it`s actually a granulated power very much like sugar.

I normally buy from Todds Motorhomes, Lostock Hall which is only round the corner from me as they have it at approx £7.50 per 400g tub so i`ll buy a couple.

Thanks for that. It's a bit naughty as the headline says "400gm"...which is also the size tub I normally buy. The best on Ebay is therefore £8.15 delivered at the mo, so your local deal is better (y)

Just in case you are not aware... Prof Basil Jarvis died peacefully on 18th December 2018, aged 82.
Professor of Microbiology, statistician, fly fisherman and keen shot.

In 9 years of "full-timing" for 5 months each summer..
We have only ever used 'tap water". Albeit mainly for cooking but including tea and coffee.
Nida likes water that has been boiled as she prefers the (no-) taste.
We top up about 25 litres a day and empty the tank when the vehicle is stored over winter.
Never put anything else in.
We once put some slightly dodgy spring water in but that was soon flushed through.

Thanks, we did know.

We met him and his wife Marjorie while on an six week trip discovering China.
This included a week cruising the yangtse river. Which is where our joint warped sense of humour
Bubbled to surface.

A great lad, RIP.
