Citroen romahome less expensive gas bottle

Hi all,i have recently bought a citroen c15 romahome and at the moment has the 907 camping gas bottle in the exterior cupboard and as many will now these are probably one of the most expensive gas bottles to use.
I am looking for any advice on another gas bottle that will fit into the exterior cupboard that is taller and around the same diametter (203mm) that will work out a lot cheaper, the 907 is around 20-25 pounds to refill (what a rip off) and only holds 2.75 kg of gas !!!.
i don't want to go with an underslung gas bottle and don't want to spend a fortune on a replacement refillable bottle (i'm very tight)i have thought about fitting a gas bottle under the seat/bed in the van as a last resort, any advice would be great, cheers Shawbags.

Can you adjust the cupboard size slightly? Your nearly at the space of the most popular one , a calorgas lpg 6kg (12L) is 256mm . You don't mention your height . There 495mm . Good luck or youll need a big jumper, and be on cold beans at them prices !!! Regards chris

As Mr99g suggested lower the bottom of your cupboard, I did it in my Bambi for the same reasons, it doesnt need lowering much to get the 6kg calor bottle in. Look at the wood in the bottom is it doubled? I took out the wood in the bottom(which i found was rotting) and replaced it with one piece of ply and i found it gave me enough room.

One thing we did in our Romahome was to use Quick release gas fittings (Supplied by any Calor supplier). Attach the Male (which is straight through with no valve) to the existing inlet pipe (which goes to in to the van and then on to the cooker, frige etc.). Attach a female on to your regulator (which has a no return valve and only works when the male is pushed in and secure so its perfectly safe).

Now, the first advantage is now swapping the cylinders when one inconveniently runs out half way through cooking lunch is as easy as pull back the quck release on the female secton to seperate the two pipes, push the male back in to the new cylinder already fitted with a female quick release fitting. Seconds and its done.

Second andvantage and the one that is really the answer to your problem. You can now purchase a larger cylinder and sit this outside your van. Have a large length of hose from the regulator on top of this new large cylinder and on the other end fit a female quick release. You can then run the pipe in to the gas locker through the bottom vent hole and up to the male bit running in to your van. A bit of a fiddle but worth it if you are staying a couple of nights.

When just out for the day or Wilding you use your small cylinder that is in the locker and safe from tamper. When you are camping on a site or feel it is safe to leave a cylinder outside the van without fear of it being nicked or tampered with, you use your large cheaper cylinder.

I even made up a 'T' section with one male which conected in to the female supply coming off the regulator and two females. You then connect the male fron the van in to one of the females to get you gas in to the van and leave the other for things like Patio heatersor BBQ cookers. You can attach and unattach the fitings with out disturbing the supply of gas as the now return valve in the female seals as soon as the male is released.

My C15 has an empty 907 which it came with at the moment, I don't use gas in winter 'cos I always have EHU.

I still have my caravan and there are two Calors in there - the 4.5Kgs butane and 3.9 Kgs propane and I have been told that I should be able to put one of those in instead of the 907 - but I haven't got round to trying it yet.

They are a bit fatter and quite a lot taller, but the bottom of the gas locker has a wire "shelf" that the bottle sits on which can be taken out - so fingers crossed this may work.

Even in summer I don't use much gas as it's only for cooking and fridge - so the amount I would save by switching from 907 to Calor isn't great.

But if you have gas heating and want to use your van a lot away from sites then it could add up.

Thanks for all of your replys,as asked the hight of the cupboard is not a problem,i have thought about standing a bottle outside of the van wich is easy to do but i do wild camp a lot,as for widening the box i may be abble to a little but not much and have not had time to measure the exact size, just as long as the closed door covers the hole it would be fine.
I will have to do something as i do want to winter camp, thanks for all the replys chaps, cheers Shawbags (CHRIS).

3.9 kg propane should fit. I'm pretty sure this is what Kangooroo has in her small Romahome.

I don't know why anyone bothers with or fits Butane as standard in this country. I guess if one is going to camp just two seasons a year it's no problem. Otherwise you need to jump through hoops to keep your bottle warm enough in the winter and that's tricky in an external locker.

We used the calor propane cylinder when we had a C15 Romahome. The cylinder will physically fit in the locker but may be difficult to get trough the openning. If you are practical take the rubber seal off, reduce the flange and refit the rubber..

I repeat They do go in!!!
