Eat them, are you sure after you have looked after them and given them names?????

Personally I buy mine oven ready for eating, much less mess and less smelly.

We have the very same chicken house! we've only had it a few weeks as their last home a secondhand shed was well past it best.

Our are free to range the a garden (veg plot fenced off), they even come in house most mornings, wanting some food. They jsut walk past the dogs without a care?

We haven't lost a bird to a fox since the hunting ban, and we back onto fields. A couple of local go out shooting them, weekly, however my friends with urban chickens are not so lucky-killed if not locked up at night! Ours haven't been locked up for years, just come and go as they please. Very low maintanence.

Hiya, The coops are great....though the window allows them to see sunlight at 6am which means no more lie ins if you have neighbours! We let ours roam the garden and they walked into the house & ate the dog food! Our dog just stood there and let them!
When we have been wildcamping, we leave the slide door open & let them come & go. No deaths or incidents (yet).

Pretty much stick to Warrens, or Welsummers or white stars or Buff Orpintons. All are pretty good layers & ok to eat after.

I like the look of the Buff Orpingtons.....very pretty.

We have 3 lovely Black Rock hens and lovely fresh eggs every day. We keep ours in an Eglu and have built a bigger run around this. Omlet have a huge amount of info on their website, they even have a forum.

Chicken Coops | Chicken Houses | Chickens | Rabbit Hutches | Beehives | Homepage | Omlet UK

Hope this helps

Bev
Hi Bev, where i work we actually sew those green omlets that cover the run, when i told Pete one day i had been sewing Omlets he thought i'd gone mad. Ali

BG,

Fly strike is when a fly or especially a Bluebottle lays its eggs in an open wound or in any poo around the bum of a hen.

As long as the hygiene side of things is good, it should not be a problem. We only lost 2 birds to this over the years. When you find out they have it, it is often too late and they need to be euthanised. One was a lovely Moran cockerel and we think he had a fight with our neighbours Rhode Island cockerel.
