Change of Gas

i have a gaslow system on the van, however i do fill red propane bottles at home for the barbaque with a adaptor, never had a problem the adapter has the same baynet fitting that is on the van .gaslow bottles sometimes vent if filled up in very cold weather with the the ambient temprature rising .
any way here are the rules for using the adapter -
(1) Bottle must be empty.Valve turned off
(2)Connect the adapter and filling gun.
(3)Open bottle valve and fill.
(4)SHUT bottle valve and remove gun.

fill the empty bottle as below
3.9kg - 7litres.
5.0kg - 9litres.
6.0kg - 11litres.
11kg - 24 litres.
13kg - 24litres.
19kg - 35 litres.
47kg - 86 litres.

DO NOT OVERFILL
:p:p

ps. does liquid gas get through the reg.
i have seen bottles used on their side .i wouldnt do it . but have seen others it worked fine . it bothered me but it never caused a problem when i was with them .and the bottles had just been filled .it went against my teaching.

A few years ago I was doing a safety inspection on a boat, the owner had just done his own gas installation, very tidily too.

Just one problem, he had fitted a couple of gas bottles 'obtained' from where he worked - they were liquid take-off bottles designed to be fitted to a forklift...

He did say that the flames on the cooker were a bit bigger than he thought they should be, and the regulator would freeze up (had a layer of frost on it). When we lit the cooker the burner flames were a foot high...

What was happening was that the liquefied gas was getting into the regulator and then vapourising, so the gas being passed through was at much too high a pressure.

The chap got a gas Warning Notice and stiff lecture on using the right type of gas bottles, plus I made him disconnect the liquid take-off bottles and take them off the boat...

Interesting that the reg froze up. Suggests that the gas was evaporating at the reg so it was doing a grand job. Might have been a different storey if it had happened at the burner:eek:

Totally correct.

My two penneth

Gas bottles LPG Butane and propane should always be stored upright, The only bottles to my knowledge designed to be used on their side are fork lifts.

In the case of lpg the valves are no more than a seated ball bearing which if placed on its side can leak gas because you dont have an efficient seal, Because they are simply not designed to work that way.

I go crackers on some of the sites I visit people storing empties upside down so selecting a full bottle is easier? I have even seen the French gas delivery drivers do it. Just simple bad practise, LPG is heavier than air so on a still day it can take ages to dissiapate.

Bottles are rarely truly empty, Because the gas is a distallation process from oil , you get an oily reminant at the bottom of the bottle? this has two implications.

One the bottle isnt truly empty as already mentioned

Two If your filling yourself, ( or the gas companies for that matter) these remnants ' heavy ends' in effect reduce the capacity of the bottle and therefore inadvertently you can overfill.

The high flames or a hovering flame are a classic sign of an overfilled bottle the reasons as you suggest the system is being charge with gas that has not 'boiled' correctly.
