cb radio

i should imagine it doesnt matter any more . i know a few drivers that still have cb in their cabs .but its gone now .
like i say i think more have the walkie talkie gear now .good for a couple of miles and doesnt attract the attention of the customs if crossing boarders . cb is still ilegal in some countries . they take them off you if they find them. you can get a ear piece wth a voice activated mic for them for a few quid as well .

i got two forty channel fm realistic hand helds one with lcd one with led readout both four watts havent used them for years with external microphones have had some decent copies on them used to talk abroad on them from the hill above me in the middle off the woods many years ago or igo onto beach and stand on tide line and work the skip

Chanel 19 was always the breaker channel but it's now full of channel hoggers !

The Diving Club I was in, we all had CB's in our cars for keeping in contact when in convoy, I had a Midland 40, then moved up to a Ham International SSB. The downside of buying those sets in the illegal era was the shady characters we had to deal with to buy them, I guess similar to the drug dealers of today.

That is not my experience. Ch 19 is dead 99.999999999999999999% of the time. Ch 14 was the normal breaking channel and Ch 19 was truck/road user breaking channel with Ch 9 reserved for emergency traffic.

I have heard one breaker at Sheffield (Woodall Services) and another passing Birmingham on M6 in the past year. These were one or two words and a bleep. It sounded like they were cross banding and using two sets to chat like on a telephone but doing something else at the same time such as playing a game on a computer.

well it is normally full in Liverpool and Stafford but i am coming over in the morning so i will see

I have one now but have to recommend you DONT DO IT!
I met my wife over the CB many years ago when i was a teen, just goes to show they can have dangerous consequences :lol-053:

Still got a midland hiding somewhere in the shed. The last time we were on it was as dead as a dodo. Was never the same when it went legal and was it really 30 years ago:scared:

If you go to funny foreign parts what can you expect Alan.

Team TS-6M Multi UK EU AM FM CB Radio and other CEPT radios are legal anywhere in the EU. The old 40 channel UK sets are only legal in the UK. Hands free is not a legal requirement for CB or Ham radio use in a vehicle unlike a mobile phone.

Only sets that have the EU chanels can be legaly used abroad.

The correct protocol is to use CH 19 if in a vehicle on the road to call (CQ) and set up a conversation (QSO) then change chanel (QSB) to another free channel for the QSO. If you just want to have a QSO then call on Ch 14 then go to a free channel.

Therefor if you monitor Ch 19 on the road or CH 14 elsewhere there is no need for a dedicated Motorhome users channel. CH 9 was to be kept free for emergency traffic.

CEPT is a European convention and Greece is currently in bother because they have broken the convention by arresting a German Radio Ham for using his transmitting equipment. He can legaly do so under the conventions reciprocal arrangements. He was originally arrested and jailed for espionage by the Greek police but that charge was dropped to using amateur radio equipment. The EU is now complaining to Greece that its Police officers are not properly trained. I would say the same applies to the lawyers and courts that have allowed this case to go ahead. The amateur is currently on bail in Germany but will have to return to Greece for a trial unless something is sorted out.

Under CEPT when I am is Spain I have to alter my Amateur Callsign to EA (a regional Identifier number) / (Stroke) and my UK callsign. ie EA5/g0fgg for the Murcia region. That way the authorities can monitor my activity and know who and where I am. Each country has its own prefix.

Blast from the past ! i had a midland 40 channel am/fm and an audioline plus 2 hand held . My handle amongst others was Slartybartfast and the baldy hedgehog .When i was still in school i went to london with my oldman and he picked up a load of cb`s whilst buying stuff to sell on xmas time. when we got home nobody had a cb it was pretty dead on the airwaves till that convoy film came out then he made a killing. I used to talk to some across the water in devon and met some lovely girls too happy days !:)

In the late 80s early 90s I used to work in London and travelled each day from Wokingham along the M4, there used to be a girl who lived on top floor of an apartment block in Slough who could see the motorway, she used be on all day giving traffic reports for the M4, saved me many a time from being stuck in a traffic jam.
Never did meet her but she certainly was a godsend to drvers :D:D

Just back on the way out ch 19 was blocked by someone, explaining why he couldn't get a sex change on the NHS all the way from Liverpool to Warrington. I think he is the same person how was blocking it last trip! other than that nice and clear I did get a breaker one nine in Southampton
