Cascade 2 water heater + leisure battery query.

Hi, wonder if anyone can help me with these queries as I'm new to campervans and don't have much of a clue.

There seems to be a blockage inside my water heater. When you turn the hot tap on the pump struggles to pump, but if I disconnect the inlet pipe from the heater it pumps through normally. Is this a common fault that's easily sorted? Or do I need to get it professionally looked at or replaced?

Also, if my van (a 1997 Renault Master) is left unstarted for more than about a week the battery goes flat. The van was a home conversion and I think some of the wiring might be a bit dodgy. Anyway, if I use the mains electric hookup will this keep the battery charged?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

The water pump - is this blockage when you first try to get water from the hot tap after filling ? if so it could be an air blockage, slowly release pressure by having the hot tap on for a few minutes(on all taps) untill water runs freely.

how many batteries do you have 1 Vehicle or 2 Vehicle and Habitation.

you may be draining from somewhere such as the radio or status ariel

Hi Steve

It wouldn't pump through when the tank was full so I've drained it but it still won't pump, so tank won't refill.

I've got two batteries.

Thanks

Pat

Sounds like the water pump has packed up, can you hear the motor when you switch the tap on ?

If you can possible impeller problem.

If you can't hear the pump, may be a fuse or a wiring issue.

As for the battery, you need to check the draw on it from the connected devices

Hi

Pump works perfectly for cold water, so blockage/problem must be to do with water heater.

Will check for power drains.

thanks for your help

Pat

check you haven't got a bent or squashed pipe anywhere ,very unlikely to have any kind of blockage in the heater as its a simple tank with top and bottom outlets ,no tricky valves

Hello,

On some for the Carver Water Heaters, there is a bleed valve on the top right on the outside flue cover (directly above the drain valve). If the heater has never been de-scalled, the input line could be blocked, however very very uncommon. If you have a bleed valve, try to get some white wine vinegar into the system to de-scale it (ideally leave in the heater for 12 hours). Best way is to run it through the entire system, will not hurt it. I would then recommend to flush the system vigarously to remove any deposits in the heater. VERY IMPORTANT, drain the boiler from the drain valve and do not run though the hot taps on the first flush through, if there is any large deposits these could clog the taps.

As for engine battery discharge, with the very slightly cold weather, you may have an engine battery fault, but always worth (if you have one) to put an amp meter between the neg post of the battery and the battery terminal to see if there is any excessive current drain.

You said "the" hot tap so do you only have one hot tap? If so, there could be a mesh filter at the inlets to the tap and the one in the hot side might be blocked. If you have several taps and the problem is the same with all then you can isolate the fault by removing the drain from the heater and seeing if the pump pushes water freely into the water heater. Might be able to do the same test by opening the pressure relief valve if one is fitted - although that runs the risk of having it jamb open.

If the flow into the heater is OK, break the hot line as soon after the heater as possible and check the flow.

Likely to be either a filter mesh screen blocked, or a check valve
