Carthago Compactline Grill Hazard Warning

If you have a new Compactline with the small oven/grill below the worktop it is probably worth checking whether there is some form of heat shield to protect the cutlery drawer. Whilst grilling toast recently the trim on the bottom of our cutlery drawer melted, curled up and then dropped off. Yesterday I raised the problem with our dealer.

Within 24 hours I have received an email from the dealer saying Carthago are sending them the parts for a “grill rework” and they will need the motorhome for 4 or 5 days to do the job. Meanwhile they suggest we avoid using the grill. The oven/grill in this position is a new option for the UK market and I do not know whether ours is an isolated construction mistake or a more general problem.

Am considering a Compactline i143 so this is a good heads up. I guess it applies to others like the c-tourer. Would be interested to know if there's an easy way to spot the differance.

An update from the dealer. The problem is not seen as widespread and there is no suggestion of a recall. The dealer has met the problem once before but not on a Carthago. They plan to remove the oven/grill, create an insulated enclosure and fit a 12V extractor fan and vent. Carthago has approved the work with the materials being sourced locally, meaning there will be little delay. Meanwhile it is ok to use the oven but not the grill. I am very happy with the speedy response from both the dealer and Carthago.

The only indication we had was too much heat spilling out of the grill. Our installation looks like this.
