Now, in fairness she suggests the chip fat was left by campers rather than motorhome users, but just how does she think they got the oil hot enough to cook chips?

Presumably with a camp fire/camping cooker?

Would that get the fat anywhere hot enough to cook chips though? I didn't think it would.

We used to cook chips on a camping cooker regularly as a kid when camping....

I doubt there would be any issues on a camp fire either (doubt anyone, knows what they cooked in it...)
Could've been sausages in a frying pan

Obviously I haven't got a clue, but my suspicion is it not true, or not completely true at least.

Why would a journalist use three terms in the same article, grease, fat and oil. Who writes like that?

We both use a Coleman petrol fuelled hob, I can guarantee, that a wok full of oil will fry perfect fish and chips. The heat generated is better than a lot of domestic hobs.

Large volumes of cooking oil are not really practical to carry around. And if you’re the sort that dumps your rubbish, are you really going to wait for it to cool and take it away with you?

You can't beat a Coleman cooker Andrew, a chip pan practically hovers above it at full blast! I've still got one from about 30 odd years ago.

Not hard to carry around in a canoe though which is what could have happened. I also paddle a bit and you can get a few weeks worth of food and gear in without too much trouble.

The vast majority of paddlers are responsible people but like motorhomers there are a few who give the rest a bad name.

At least we now have "Dirty Campers" to blame.
I still have One Of These from many years ago in my early carp fishing days, frigtened me, fill with petrol, pressurise, light.
Perfectly safe, boiled a kettle in next to no time, I'm sure a stir fry in a wok would be no problem as indeed chips.
Can't help thinking if you feel the need to cook chips while camping in a tent getting pissed with your mates maybe camping should not be your first choice.
That's what high streets are for, surely. Obviously not the camping bit.

I've still got my Coleman 2 burner AND 3 burner 'suitcases'....

Metal ammo box makes a great oven for bread/cakes/naan bread/pies.

I've eaten curries/chips/pies and all sorts including bread baked in a metal ammo box whilst camping/caravanning/trailer tenting/bivvying/campervanning AND motorhoming....

I'm not sure WHAT I eat matters as much as what I leave behind me?

I have no problem with people getting pissed or eating what they like Tim as long as they don't bother other people (I know they often do!).

But it's the state they leave the place in that's important.

anyway ,if i'd found the bird ,i'd have washed it in detergent and never thought of getting any charity involved . too easy for them to go for the budget option .
too many assumptions in this 'tale'. was it oil ,grease, factory waste etc , who knows ?
was it left by campers , a passing boat , a nutter who had his goldfish nicked - i could write a better story . the only facts are a bird was found with something on it and now it's not around ,possibly dead, we never saw the corpse . the rest is speculation
