I feel sorry for the child myself missing out on a valuable education and socialising with mates, Instead he will be stuck in a van bored out his tree. Irresponsible Father if you ask me. But hey thats only my opinion.:D:D:D:D

This is the supposed irresponsible father and i have made this decision after my own personal experiences! i myself was brought up on a boat from the age of 8 to 15, my father built the boat himself then took me and my brother out of school! we spent a total of 5 years away sailing around the med/North Africa. i can say from my brother's and my own experience that it was the best experience and education we could of received! we do not come from money and my dad still lives on the boat as he sold the house to fund our traveling, my brother is very well educated and has a very well payed job as a design engineer and as for myself, I've just turned 30 and am in the fortunate position of being able to semi retire! this has allowed me to take some time out and spend some quality!!! time with my family instead of being lucky to get an hour after work! there's nothing tort to a 5 year old in school that my partner and myself can't and won't teach her! don't forget there's the 6 week of summer holidays so 3 weeks at the end of term and 3 weeks of the new term! and we get 3 month's away, and as for the social side of things I'm hopping there's going to be lots of people with kids and she will meet lots of new friends from all different country's, what a great experience and she might even pick up some new language's!!;)

funny that we have been on the road with 2 girls now 1 is 5 yrs 1 is 11 yrs and they love it we have lived o nthe road for 2 yrs now in a self build me and my girlfreind keep 2 jobs down and the girls still go to school every day they wouldnt change it for the world the kids i mean but we have just bought another house so our van is up for grabs going on ebay end of april

Have the kids been going to the same school?? You say you have held two jobs down, Do you work out of the van or go to a place of work?? I'm not saying its a bad thing but yours does not sound like a Mid life crisis as the camper with kid thread. Also travelling around Europe is different to wilding it in the Uk.
Of course this only my opinion.:D:D

Hi there camperwithkids,

I can find nothing wrong with your plans for you and the kids. I spent half of my working life travelling the world and found it to be very educational (and sometimes a bit hairy:D)

On the odd occasion that I could have the family with me, my kids loved it and still go on about it now and again. They never ever mention school though.

It did you and your brother no harm and should be the same for your family.

There is one thing that puzzles me though. If you can afford to be semi retired, why do you have such a miserly budget for a long term van. You will not get a lot for that sort of money. If I were you, I would look at self builds as you get more for your money if it has been converted properly.

Best of luck.

hi the low budget is because we are thinking of just buying a cheap camper to try it out as will still have to keep the family home running while we try out the camping life style.

yes they been going to same school and we both have a job in a factory in manchester and have done for 7yrs each

Nice one Mate

Look for an old Hymer - maybe a 534 with a pull down bed at the front & a lounge/ bed at the back - loads of space. Best of luck I'm sure you'll have a ball. We did 2 years in Europe, met loads of people on long tours with kids, they all seemed happy.

Be good

Go for it my freind, life is not all about work.
Apart from getting married my best memories are the ones i made whilst having adventures on the road.If you can semi retire sell up and go full timing as we intend to do dont be bogged down by possesions or bricks and mortar. We live in a lovely spot with a lovely view over the coast and sea, but as far as we are concerned we aint working to 65 to pay for the thing.
Im 38 and maybe im having a mid life crisis too!!

Life is too short, go and make happy memories together!!
Im lucky as hell though as my wife feels exactly the same as i do,maybe its our starsign being the same:D

I would also agree with the post above and go for a Hymer.

If you are only traveling for a few months then why don't you hire one
you will get what you want and reliability, also any probs you get back up..................
Around £700.00 a week or possibly less if long term. When all out of your system carry on with life before the crisis :eek:

Missing school hmm  I got fair results at school but my job still s****
not much out there better for what I want to do.

At my age I think football is out of the question:mad::mad::mad:

I did not mean to offend anyone out there. I was only expressing my opinion, I hope you have a wonderful time and do what you want to. Enjoy enjoy enjoy.

Lifes for living so go and enjoy, Once again my apologies if you are offended.:D

Well i am offended and i dont accept your apologies, what you gonna do about it?

If its done right your kid will learn more in a month on the road than a year in any school in this country. This I can tell you from personal experience. The other side of the coin is kids do miss peer interaction, but this is more if you are on the road on a long term basis, a few months will be fine. Go for it mate:)

I was taken to west Africa by my parents aged 7 and was there off and on til 14, those were the best most mind expanding time of my life with very little formal education.
I work in a school and believe me I had by far the better education.
