After hearing of Gordon's (the laird) misfortune with a snapped cambelt I decided to change mine, all the parts arrived yesterday including a new water pump (which is nearly as big as my Panda's engine :lol-053:) , I have checked they are authentic parts and all is OK, I have the van up on ramps to give me room underneath as I am still tender around my middle and now all the covers are off and now the fun begins.

How long is it since yours was changed?

Isn’t it stated in service schedule for cam belt? They used to be somewhere between 20 and 40 thousand miles on cars I have had them on but folks didn’t usually like going to 40k. Chains should be good for 100k plus

Hey, well done you, but just take it easy now and don't overdo it or there'll be tears before bedtime!!! :hammer: ;)

It is stated in service schedule, I am nowhere near the mileage re ommendation but there are also recommendations for the age of the belt, my van has been standing a long time which doesn't do the belts much good so better safe than sorry.

My biggest worry Marie is if my body copes with this I will have to help with the housework again:hammer:

Yes I guess a lot of vans won’t get used as often as cars. You would think motorhome manufacturers would maybe give some indication for this like cars do for different types of use. I really must stop expecting anything to do with Motorhome’s to be comparable to anything else, logical or even usable haha

At least I don’t expect a dealer to have a customers best interests in mind so I am getting better :)

Preventative is always better than proactive when it comes to engines though :)

If its as hot where you as here then you should be locked up never mind doing the housework.

Well done & good luck, but go steady & take notice of any warning signs.

Most cam belts are changed at between 40-60 thou, most chains can be left to over a 100 thou.
Some cars had to have their belt tensioners reworked due to bad design again!

I've a feeling that the chain can be left longer, if it's a Duplex, which is where Mercedes cocked up in their 2000-2005 cars.
The early 2000's was a time of cutting costs to produce an inferior product at a premium price & not just at Mercedes!

Yeah Vauxhall made a boo boo with their 2 litre turbo petrol motors around 2000 but I think it was oil flickers for camchain, May have been the 2.2 engine. They didn’t alter the service interval or actively inform users though so chains were failing early.

I've always been told just forget about the chain Phill, "should never need changing".

Perhaps I need to think again, I know if they do go they can cause massive damage like a belt can.

I just had a niggling feeling even before Gordon had problems but because we couldn't use the van as I was it kept getting put off, as a retired mechanic I know better than to neglect the jobs that can lead to expensive repairs, last time I changed the belt it was done in less than half a day, I have spent longer than that trying to find my 36mm socket:lol-053:

Fiat ............................. 5 years or 60,000 miles whichever comes first.

Peugeot ...................... 10 years or 72,000 miles whichever comes first.

Personally i considered 10 years to be too long on my Peugeot 2.8 HDi so i had it done along with the water pump at 7 years for peace of mind

The garage informed me i was getting it done too early and had 3 more years and 20,000 more miles before i needed to have it done :rolleyes2:

I told them to go ahead and do it. It is my motorhome, my money, my choice and my sanity :scared:

Did they try to do it again when the 20k was done :)

A wee update terry, after not being able to get parts easy or at all, coastal motorhomes ,Martin and nick have sourced me a cam gear from Italy,2*8 timing covers which fit the 2*5 block with a wee bit modification I believe ,they’ve got me drive shaft seals, thermostat and a lux clutch assy .service imho has been fantastic so far ,fingers crossed all parts correct on arrival.just waiting on the turbo report now.

Hope all goes smooth with your t belt job terry
TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY AS WELL,!

I would have informed them ( in the politest possible way of course ) that it had already been done as showing in the service record

... and if you expect us to believe that Mr Woo .... oops! There goes that flying pig straight past the window again ... :raofl:;) :)

5.5 years, which for a ducato 2.8JTD is slightly too long. I will get it done when it's booked in for the mot and service in October.

10 years

...Yeah....I'm with the Woo and decided 10 years was time for our belt change even though mileage was quite low. Likewise our garage said the belt was good for longer but I insisted on new one. However, to his credit he did point out that our tyres, although with lots of tread, were also 10 years old !! So, new belt n tyres all round.....nice feeling of being safe all round !!! Maja07

Strange 🤔 I thought Fiat/Peugeot/Citroen were all the same base vehicle.

..oh, on the diy belt change theme (I notice you retired mechanic Tezza) but was impressed with a thread on here (I think) of how a bloke changed his belt. He cut it in half the long way round which kept the timing and cogs stable.....removed outer half....slid the new one on halfway....cut the other half of the old one off....you get the rest !! Just thought that was clever.....too scary for me lol 😂. Hope yours goes well Terry !! Maja07
