Calais to Venice.
Hi sat in a field near Winchester deliberating which route to take.
Right here we go. I am intending to go to Venice and on to Croatia.
Wife prefers to go via France and Mont Blanc. I prefer Belgium, luxembourg,Switzerland.
Needless to say someone will disagree and know better so let's have it.
The reason for this route it's obviously to miss French tolls.

Last year we did N. France, Luxembourg, across the Alpenstrasse in Germany (beautiful and an easy drive, highly recommended) through Austria, down through the Plockenpass (avoid unless on a motorbike or in a smart car, Google it if you really want to see it; husband disagrees and says I'm a nervous passenger ...) to N. Italy, skirted the very short coastline of Slovenia and into Croatia. We came back via Venice, We avoided tolls most of the way, but in Italy, fuel is expensive and tolls are cheap, so it's worth paying them there because you spend so much time navigating towns and roundabouts you probably spend more on fuel anyway.

At Venice, we stayed at Camping Vanezia (ACSI book number 2775 in 2015). It was relatively cheap, decent size pitches, and really easy to get into the city by bus then water bus. It's also near a huge park if you want some green space, we have a dog so it was great for him.

Hope that helps, have fun!

Ps. Between Trieste in Italy and the Ankaran peninsula in N. Slovenia, if you take the coast road to avoid the motorway and the Vignette tolls, there is a really narrow tunnel. We are about 10'6 high and single decker buses do use it. Yes, I really am a nervous passenger but just so you know ...

If you drive onto the island there is a large multi storey car park. Right next to it overlooking the bay is motorhome parking, with free electric and water. The parking (from memory) was 12 Euros for the day or 20 for 24 hours. Not sure how that compares to the train fee mentioned above.

We stayed at a little site near venice called Al Bateo.
You can walk to the waterbus in 5 mins and there is a beach to other side but you need a push bike. Or 30min walk.
The campsite gives away free bus tickets if you don't fancy to walk to the beach

route planning

hey joe, theres a European road atlas, I think its Phillips, not too dear in the shops showing all the toll roads in purple, or just go on google earth, click on route planning, put your details of start and end of route, and use the filters to filter out toll road, and scenic etc........that will give you the shortest route.....steve bristol

We went Lake Annecy, Mont Blanc tunnel, Aosta. Lake Garda , Milan, Venice great trip, spent 3 nights in Venice on a Camp Site , right at the Venice Harbour entrance, short bike ride to the ferry for Venice, we took a Ferry from Venice to Greece , and the Ferry followed a Cruise ship out of the Harbour, happy days. Very easy driving to Venice the way we went , I will do it again sometime and take more time.
