Calais to Barcelona.

What's the best winter route? We're thinking down to Toulouse, heading to the coast near Narbonne via Carcassonne, then down to Barcelona. Or would it be better to head for Irun, then across to Barcelona? We're in no rush and will try to avoid toll roads where possible.

I know, we're not in a rush, I'm just wondering best route weather wise, or would they both be as good or bad.
