Bushfires, Northern Portugal.

The government is paying compensation to the affected landowners, next week.

It makes me suspicious about how these remote locations suddenly burst into flames.
Why wait years for the pine and eucalyptus, ( an explosive mix), to mature enough to cut them down, as a cash crop ?
Money today, or logs tomorrow.?
I think the fire season will end with the onset of rain.
Quite a few arrests for arson. One recently after a fire in Figeiro does Vinhos.. doesn't seem to be related to burning their own properties though, at least never seen that reported....some seem to like the fires? The rules about fire breaks, scrubland and boundaries from roads should help but enforcing them is spasmodic. Eucalyptus and pine are the worst mixture!

Looks better.
Let's hope for more rain

do you still get all the scary stories ?
like the fully equipped scuba diver , found dead in a tree
minibus full of dead folk. trying to escape , but the engine ran out of oxygen and stopped..followed by all the people
small planes heard at night ,fires started in the morning , then small parachutes found , attached to loaves of bread stuffed with incendiary stuff and a simple matchbook and fag delayed ignition
etc

The scuba diver was supposed to have been picked by an airborne water scoop.
I bet his wetsuit was full of sh#t
There were supposed to be other vehicles trapped behind the minibus . All perished.
Urban myth, or what ?
