broadband on your travels

Bear in mind that Orange and O2 have merged. The wife has an O2 mobile and I have an Orange one and we can use both systems now. This should give the best UK coverage.
I think it's Orange & T-Mobile that have merged, and only for voice calls at the moment though I think they will be sharing data in the future.

wi-fi hotspot

I have an HTC Desire phone on 3, which has just been updated to Android 2.2

This allows you to use your phone, via a local wi-fi connection to a laptop (wi-fi hotspot), for access to the internet.

Potentially useful, if you have such a phone with a reasonable data allowance, and means you don't have to purchase a separate dongle.

Belt & Braces

I have "3" 3G modem - unlocked - and have sims for all the networks (UK), on PAYG.

I mainly use 3 in the UK, but I got an French Orange Sim, while there in the summer.

I will probably look at one of those WiFi Boosters, before the summer, as the kids are very heavy users (You Tube / Video).

So if you really need Internet Access, you really do need more than one solution.

Cheers

As I understand it, a laptop on its own cannot be a hotspot. To become one it needs linking to an ethernet port on a pc or router and setting up an ad-hoc network.
I use an HTC Touch Pro and access hotspots directly or, on Windows 7, by linking it to my Pc for wireless access using the router as a source of Internet.
Why bother to use a laptop at any rate when you can directly log into wireless networks?
If you are desperate, look at How to convert your laptop into a Wireless HotSpot?
