British teens sexually assaulted in NZ

I'm on my own and I wouldnot feel safe to wildcamp on my own.

My mind runs a muck sometimes. I even had you all down as mass murders for the Hayfield meet.:D:D
and if there were a couple of m/h wilding I would still feel unsure as my imagination would run away with me.:rolleyes:
I possible would only feel safe with the wilders I have meet already from this forum:):)

There's a risk in everything you do, isn't there? I camp solo a lot but I do have a dog - and a big maglite at the ready (plus a few other little surprises if anyone does break a window). I don't think I'd be as confident without the pooch tho. He's got great hearing and makes a big racket if anyone comes near. I know there are other women who have vans and wild camp too..it's a good idea to always try to park so as you can drive off quickly if you need to.

I don't think anywhere in the world is really safe any more - years ago, we were told never to wild camp in Oz but it's sad that it's happened in NZ now. I feel angry that women don't have the freedom to do things like wild camping without living in fear.

Hope they string him up by the b**ls Trev, and well done to the girls for the way they handled it.
It reminds me of the time Kate (Irenerobbie)joined us for a meet after staying alone the night before on the borders, I couldnt help but admire her courage:)

I can really sympathise with that, Polly. But they're not all axe murderers out there! Maybe us solo females should plot to go to the same meet sometime? L

Polly......... WE were on remand when we came to Hayfield so we left the guns, axes and knives locked up in the wardens shed.....
untill Lenny broke in and shaved his head with the axe.

I really did not want to post this on here so not to scare or put off our female members from wildcamping, I thought hard but then I felt you all should know even though it did not happen here in our country.
Yes those two young women where very brave in the way that they dealt with the situation.
Aye Lenny he wants his balls fecking cut of with a blunt knife.

Lone Female Wild Camping

I'd go for that :) when my knee gets better and I can drive again :-(

And just remember, statistically, it's the men that are at far much more risk of violent assault than us women...... it's just that we have been socialised to be more afraid. When it makes us appropirately cautious of our own safety, that's healthy, but Polly, don't allow paranoia to control your life!

Well done to the grrrls in NZ. They have exactly the right attitude to coming through it as survivors, rather than victims.

Note to the guys - threatening to cut their 'bits' off is generally not helpful to female victims of sexual assault. This is a crime of power, so women need to take back their own power in achieving 'justice'. Other *men* taking 'revenge' on the perputrator doesn't generally help women regain power, so it's more about the man making himself feel better than helping the victim.

Hi Janeyjane,
It may not be helpfull but I would feel a lot happier in knowing that the scumbag would not be able to commit the same kind of offence again a rapists should have their bits cut off and the world would be a safer place and the same punishment for those that fiddle with kiddies, hanging is to good for the likes of them they should be made to suffer like they make their victims suffer.

You said it yourself "I would feel a lot happier", nothing to do with getting justice for the victim. The world is a relatively safe place, there's just much more press coverage these days, whipping up public paranoia. Vigilanteism isn't a good system of justice, as was shown when a peadiatrician was attacked a few years back because the 'mob' didn't understand the difference between that and a paedophile. America has experimented with both physical and chemical castration as a solution to sex offenders. It wasn't successful.

Yes i would be a happier if it was law that he should have his bits removed and sent to prison for life (life meaning life not ten or eight years)

So we should not be allowed to read about something like this when it happens, paranoia its nothing to do with this case as it is fact not a whim of of someones vivid imagination.

Where in my posts do I mention vigilanteism I have not suggested that I or anyone else should actualy go and cut off anyones bits off

Well there is no excuse for some people being ignorant in the eyes of the law.
America has experimented with both physical and chemical castration as a solution to sex offenders. It wasn't successful.
Since when did the American powers that be get anything right anyway.

I always leave a large dog-bowl outside of the van at night ;)

I think we are victims if we stop doing things we enjoy and that includes wild camping, If we take all the precautions we can to keep our self safe including being vigalant and careful then I certianly would not stop. It has been proven thing can happen in broad daylight and in busy streets as happens to the young people that have been stabbed recently. As to things being worse yes I do agree things have got worse and dont believe its down to the media coverage, If we stopped haveing so many do gooders and make the punishment fit the crime then things may be different. I think those girls dealt with this with courage and good on them!!

Aye mlynnf50,
The law is to soft with these sort of crimes and thats a fact, having said that this particular crime was in New Zealand so I don't know what the punishment for such a heinous crime in that particular country.

a couple of years ago i was woke up with my dogs barking i know their diffrent barks and know some one was about so i went to check, didn't put the yard lights on or the torch as i got to the back of the yard i could hear some one in the barn so i shouted to come out or i was sending the dogs in no answer so i opened the door and let them in seconds later there was screaming and out comes a youth, put the lights on and could see he had tried to get a quad out so i phoned the police and waited a pc and wpc turned up 30 mins later told them what happend first words the wpc spoke were if them dogs have marked him i'll have them put down:eek: should just have used the pick shaft and let him crawl home

That's a good one! I used to carry a huge pair of heavy boots but now I generally choose my spot during the day then return to park after dark and leave early in the morning before I'm seen.

I choose my spot carefully, keep my sleeping bag unzipped at the foot and have my ignition key readily to hand incase I need to move on. I've been wild-camping for 4-5 years and, so far, have never had any trouble (and I hope it stays that way!).

Solo wild camping

I always leave a large dog-bowl outside of the van at night ;)

Excellent ploy! I really go for that idea!

And like Kangooroo, I always keep my keys easily to hand in case a fast getaway is needed. I was trying to count up how many nights I've wild camped solo and it runs into hundreds, though in the early days a lot of those were sleeping in the car - I couldn't afford a camper then. A few times I've avoided places I'd planned on stopping because iffy characters were around but so far, touch wood, no scary moments at all. I reckon the golden rule is not to let it be seen that you're alone. Arriving late and leaving early is always a good plan and using the cab curtains and blinds for privacy.

I aim to keep on wilding cos I love it...and I'm off to buy a mega dog bowl!:D

Old Aurther, what a predicament your were in, if the poor dogs attcked him they would have to be put to sleep, if you had attacked him you would have been up on an assult charge, what is this world coming to when we cant even protect ourselves, I was in Spain at the market and the stall holder caught a young lad steeling a wallet off his stall and immediately thumped around the ear and he went off crying, the police came and took details and went to look for him and certainly no prossecution for the stall holder. How did you manage to keep him there for half an hour? the police dont care if its not a parking offence
