Just wondering about what owners of the 'larger' vehicle do for breakdown/recovery services - is it a case of fingers crossed the worst never happens or is there any specialist services you can use. Just looking to upsize to LWB Iveco Daily base vehicle and pretty sure the usual suspects don't cover such size vehicles? Any hints and/or tips on this one?

I use Mayday (Greenflag via the Caravan Club) no size or weight limit. but UK only. Don't know what the service is like and hope I never need to find out.

If you insure with Saga or most other Motorhome Insurance Companies you can pay a little extra for breakdown cover

ive been with green flag for 2 years now and cannot complain at there service .i have had to have them out twice when i had the Alhambra ,same guy from the local garage came each time and in about half an hour ,they use a local garage to do there recovery/repair work .unlike rac/aa

We use MHF insurance with breakdown. They have been good the only time I have used them, they sub'd it out to a local hgv recovery firm who fixed it at the campsite.

For my car and motorcycle I use a breakdown insurance, whilst they include any car or bike I am with they won't cover the m/h, shame.

I'm with C & C C Arrival, they cover any size motorhome or caravan.

We are with the Caravan Club's Mayday and Red Pennant, who both cater for any size of motorhome, Mayday covers the UK and Red Pennant in Europe.

My Insurance (Comfort) includes full UK and Europe breakdown cover. It works very well. We have tested it in the UK, Spain and Italy.

4600kg, 7.21m motorhome. Plus trailer if towing

The cover is with RAC commercial.

Safeguard insurance includes breakdown and recovery for all Europe up to 7.5 T.
We unfortunately had to use twhen our MH 8.5m & 6.5 T, broke down 300 yds from home on our home way to the continent. Where loaded onto the back of a transporter and taken to the Iveco dealers.

i remember the only time i had to call on the rac to recover our van .out they came with a normal bevertail type breakdown and the driver asked me if i would drive it up on the back .when we got home he asked me to drive it off .he explained he would rather me do it than him .

My Edna is an Iveco Turbo Daily LWB and I had to have her taken home once.
We were with AA at the time and there was no problem driving her up onto the beaver-tailed breakdown wagon. The problem was getting her off it... but that was only coz the brakes had completely failed (and there were no spare calipers available within the timescale).
T'was no problem really as the guy was ok with me "driving" her off the 'tail whilst still being hooked up to the winch.

Red Pennant from The Caravan Club

I have just been on a Motorhome Holiday that was meant to include 3 nights at Disneyland Paris and then 4 nights in Switzerland and then 1 night in Calais before returning home, unfortunately on our first day we broke down 100 miles north of Paris on Friday 27th December around 10pm in the pouring rain. With our Red Pennant policy we were able to continue our holiday with a people carrier car, we had hotel accommodation organised for the entire trip and our 8.7m 5t Motorhome was collected on a flatbed lorry from the UK. Total cost of claim between £7k - £8k. Well worth getting insured through The Caravan Club and excellent service through the entire process with helpful staff conversing in all languages to help get us through awkward situations . . . I cant fault them.

We have used Mayday from the caravan Club for years and have used Red Pennant when we are in europe.

We have had need of their services on several occassions (always for the cars not caravan or motorhome) They have always arrived promptly. For example The wife's MX5 played up on Friday on the way home from work. She managed to nurse it home, but it would not retart as the battery was flat.

I called Mayday, they promised someone would be with us within an hour. I told her as we were tucked up at home we were not a priority and not to worry. We received a text to confirm receipt of the call and a phone call 15 mins later to say the mechanic was 8 miles away and about to set off. He arrived 35 mins after the original call. The problem was the alternator, as it was late he informed us that when we had arranged a garage he would come back and take the car there if we wished. Don't think that we could have wished for better service !

Just had the renewal notice for £124 which includes personal cover. So the motorhome, my car and the wife's car are covered, and any car we happen to be driving or are passengers. I think this is all pretty good peace of mind.
I am sure I could spend hours looking for cheaper, but would it be as comprehensive ?

Sorry forgot to say, in my renewal notice was an offer that if I refer people to Mayday and they join, then the new member gets a £5 M and S voucher and so do I ! I can do this up to 5 times.

If your up for it just PM me.

We use Sage or Safeguard for our insurance and get full European breakdown cover with them. This is run by the AA in Europe, unfortunately we have had to use them twice, the service was absolutely fantastic, no problem with language when we phoned in, when the taxi arrived to take us to the hotel they had booked for us there was even an interpreter with it to make sure we got settled in ok, after the van was fixed and we were home we even had a call to make sure every thing was ok. so for us its got to be the AA, I think when you are in a situation like a breakdown not being able to communicate with people make things even more stressful.

I'm with C & C C Arrival, they cover any size motorhome or caravan.

So do I, but the only time I have had to call them out (RAC) they where useless didn't know where the A1 or Scotch Corner was!!!
I complained to head office and was told, you cant expect our call centre to know every road.
I was :mad2:

Arrival - not impressed.

I am with the Rac but joined c&cc for the 'Arrival' package. Called them out once, phoned the tel.no. on reverse of card, chap at other end said "what weight", "No, can't cover you for 3.5T", he just didn't want to know, got passed from pillar to post. Took me 1 1/2 hours to get any sort of response and by that time they hadn't even asked where I was or what the problem was!

I would certainly recommend that you call an breakdown Company's contact number as it's only then that you find out how good they are - or in Arrival's case, are not.

Suffice it to say, I was not impressed....!

I'm with the RAC and I checked with them when I got my van - there should be no problem for vehicles of up to 5.5m and 3.5t on a standard policy. That's OK for us as our van's 5m but I would have thought that most motorhomes would be longer, which I guess is why they set up the Arrival policy.

If you're going to be travelling in the rest of Europe, you can get your cover from ADAC in Germany. They can be a bit difficult to contact and some of the call handlers seem to think that they don't cover the UK, but they do. The last number I had for them was 00 49 94 15 23 44. ADAC do cover you for the UK, but I believe that is only up to £250 in relay costs, so you might be better having a domestic policy as well.
