FOR SALE - Brand new spare wheel and tyre - 225/70 R15 C (off a Fiat Ducato) Well when I say brand new ...... what I mean is it has never been used. Recently part-exed my van with rip-off merchants Elite Motorhomes, and they wanted to give me next to nothing for my old van ....... so I left next to nothing on it. I took the spare wheel, solar panel, wind out awning, blinds, etc. In fact anything that wasn't screwed down ..... and a few things that were. The date on the tyre is 2005 and the wheel itself although never used has a bit of ware from being hung underneath the van, but should be worth £40 to someone (collect only between Leeds and Bradford). Thanks for reading this and happy wild camping. 07907 773670

From ROSPA Website

Rubber compounds used in tyres contain anti-oxidising chemicals that help to slow down the natural ageing process of untreated rubber. However, tyres do deteriorate with age, which increases the risk of tyre failure, and there are many ways in which this can be spotted:

Cracking/crazing on the side wall of the tyre, caused by its flexing
Distortion of tyre tread
Deformation of the carcass of the tyre

There will also be a deterioration of the ride quality caused by vibrations through the tyre. This may signify the tyre's performance has been affected by age and should be investigated as soon as possible.

All tyres that display signs of ageing should be removed and not put to further use.

Tyres that have been in storage should not be placed into use if they are over 6 years old, from their date of manufacture. When a tyre has been in use, the effects of ageing are lessened to a degree, but such tyres should be replaced after 10 years

..

Sounds like it's a scrap job .. .. Hardly worth the risk of selling it to someone.

Michelins recommendation :
After five years or more in service, your tyres should be thoroughly inspected at least once per year. If the need arises, follow the recommendations of the vehicle manufacturer regarding replacing the original equipment tyres. As a precaution, if the tyres have not been replaced 10 years from their date of manufacture (see how to read a tyre sidewall), Michelin recommends replacing them with new tyres. Even if they appear to be in usable condition and have not worn down to the tread wear indicator..
I replaced a full set of Michelin Camping tyres last year that were manufactured in 2005 despite the fact that the van had only done 8,000 miles and the tyres were like new . I was there when they were fitted (and as an ex tyre fitter in my youth ) and inspected the the old casings internally and externally and could see no signs of ageing .Over the years as a HGV driver i have had a few blow-outs so better to be safe than sorry as i would not want one at 60mph in my aluminium can on wheels .:scared::scared::scared:
