We have a 2011 Swift 622 with a Fiat Ducato base. There is a fault with the BCU but as the vehicle is over 10 years old we have been told that a replacement is unavailable, so basically we have a motorhome for which we cannot get an MOT and which has only 7500 miles on the clock. It has been in the garage for 5 months as they have been trying to solve the problem and source a replacement. They are trying get one cloned at the moment. It is absolutely appalling that we may have a motorhome of this age which effectively is unusable. Fiat UK have been useless and Fiat Europe didn’t even bother to answer my husband’s email.

A "BCU fiat ducato" refers to the Body Control Unit (BCU), also known as the Body Control Module (BCM), of a Fiat Ducato van. This is a crucial electronic component that acts as the vehicle's central computer for non-engine functions, managing systems such as lights, locks, windows, and the dashboard. A faulty BCU can cause symptoms like flickering lights, malfunctioning power locks, and non-responsive wipers.

What the BCU/BCM does:

  • Controls vehicle functions:
It is responsible for managing various electrical components and systems throughout the vehicle, beyond just the engine.
  • Manages communication:
It acts as a central hub for communication between different electronic modules in the vehicle.
  • Diagnoses issues:
Symptoms like flickering dashboard lights, non-functioning door locks, or wipers that don't work can indicate a failing BCU.
Symptoms of a failing BCU: Flickering headlights or dashboard lights, Power door locks that work intermittently or not at all, Wipers that stop functioning, An unresponsive horn, and Issues with the security system or radio volume.

How to address a faulty BCU:
  • Replacement: You may need to replace the entire unit.

  • Programming: A new BCU will often require programming or "flashing" to your specific vehicle to ensure proper communication and function.

  • Cloning: In some cases, a cloning service can be used to transfer the data from your old BCU to a new one, especially for older vehicles.
