Best way to sell?

Unfortunately we have made the decision to sell our motorhome, rather than see him sitting on the drive unused for a couple of years.
I can only find 2 similar vehicles on the web (Lunar Premier H592) of different age & mileage, have never seen another one & only heard of one other owner, Iampatman on WC.
So I have a pile of questions.

  1. How do I work out a selling price?
  2. What is the best place/method to sell it?
  3. He is currently sorned but insured so I can presume that if someone is interested & wants to view him I could quickly tax him before a test drive?
  4. If someone wanted to take him for a drive do we keep their car keys or sit in on the drive?
  5. Best way to get a foolproof payment?
  6. I don't think I am likely to fall foul of any of the current scams from unseen buyers but what should I be watching out for?

Once I have all the details sorted I will of course, post him on WC.
If it wasn't for our current circumstances, we wouldn't be considering this at all because he suits us really well & has been a life-changer for us. If we can sell him we will be putting the money in the bank for when things change & we can buy a replacement.

Foolproof payment

Internet bank transfer
takes less than 5 mins
But you both need internet banking

you keep keys until this is done

Test Drive
1 You Drive buyer inpassenger seat
2 They drive you in Passenger seat
Their car your partner in with their partner

I have had a quick look at your post and as you have not submitted any details of your van such as year, berths etc. It is difficult to suggest a price.
If you have a look on Autotrader I am sure you will find models similar to yours, as over a range they are all basically similar prices. Just add or deduct for year, mileage etc.
And again Autotrader is a descent selling place. I would stay away from Ebay as besides the charges it is full of time wasters offering silly money.
Do not meet anywhere but your own home and if they wish to test drive make sure they are covered for insurance as the old "drive any other vehicle not belonging to you" has been dropped by most insurers. And go with them or drive them yourself.
Payment is best by Bank transfer straight into your account or a cheque, but make it clear that it will not be released until funds have cleared. As I am imagining it is a 2006/2007 model worth approx 22,000 who has that sort of cash around and it could have been printed that morning.
Good Luck selling.
Dave.

Thanks Dave,

Van is an 08 3 berth, Lunar Premier H592 as per my profile. My problem is that there are only 2 on the web both different years and mileages to compare it with. I can't compare with other makes & models becaiuse I don't know what would be comparable.

I don't want to go down the eBay route for exactly the reasons you state. I think I'll start looking at Autotrader, they seem to come up well in web searches.

Does anyone know if I can re-tax him instantaneously on the web? I'm presuming I can but you never know.

Don't be surprised if a buyer wants to pay cash .as my buyer did .I took the buyer to my bank with a lidle bag full of cash paid it in .money in my account job done .beware lots of fake money about .l was in the caravan club so I could advertise for free on their club site .it is automatically put on web sites ,it did sell my van .

Make sure they are insured to drive your van as there car ins may only allow them to drive a car tpft,if not and there stopped or worse you fall.

People worry about scare stories too much we have sold on ebay , 2 motorhomes recently both easy and straightforward one was cash the other a bank transfer done by the guy that morning,he collected it in the evening.
Had 23k cash from the other guy wasn't going to count it all so grabbed a random 1k bundle to count.
You soon get a feel for the people that you are dealing with.

I think you're right I'd know a dodgy person, but on eBay it's the time wasters that bug me.

Hi Sharon,

Sorry to hear you're selling your Lunar. Unless it goes to someone on the forum I'll be the only one on here with one! Who will I go to for tips then?
But I hope the sale goes well and you get the right price. As mine is the same model and year I'll be interested to know how much you get for it.
Best of luck,

Pat

You could do it on a classified advert that way it is no different to advertising it anywhere else,
I have bought and also sold many vehicles on eBay without problems

If you talk to one or two lunar dealers they may give a little guidance. i.e what they would sell for , trade price and pitch between. Alternatively pitch at a price top end of your expectations and "suck and See" lots of internet sites offering free listings. Yoy can always drop the price , but hard to increase it !

I don't have any idea where lunar sit in the market, similar layouts etc on more common vans may also assist you.

Taxing on line shouldn't be an issue if the van is mOT'd. Some dealers may even sell on a commission for you, but bear in mind they will have prep costs etc to cover their backsides

I'll give the selling through a dealer a miss. Many years ago I was a witness in a fraud case. He got 3 years for selling motor homes through his dealership and neglecting to pass the proceeds on to the owners. I worked for him as a petrol station manager and embarrassingly shared the same surname.

And don't get out of the vehicle to change seats OR take the keys with you if you do!

eBay Classified

Rather than plough through pages & pages on eBay, as I can't find the answer I thought somone on here is bound to know.

If you put up a classified ad how long does it stay on the site for?

I would recommend listing on Gumtree or Preloved first. Its free! I have done this in the past and if not sold after a month then use ebay, I have sold cars and a campervan this way in the past. I have just sold my motorbike through gumtree within 3 days of listing it and for the price I was after. I use ebay last as you have to pay but it does work as more people look. Autotrader is another good one but again you have to pay!

Good luck with the sale.

Now I've just got to get Percy sorted & ready for sale.
Best thing is we will be putting the money in the bank ready to buy another at the drop of a hat, hope fully soon enough.

Come on Sharon. Lets see Percy on the WC classifieds.

Good luck with the sale.
