Bedtime Reading ( Imperial College Science ) the Virus

I have read this.
It still amazes me that school closures are not implemented !

One of the Multi coloured graphs and associated figures indicate that the government know school closures will "Flatten the graph" !
This being one of their stated aims

The mantra that it will reduce the number of nurses is not to be ignored but
1 The overall benefit is known
2 Hospitals/nurses seem to manage OK in the 6 week summer holiday
3 The Easter holiday is almost upon us so close sooner
4 Schools will start to close or partially close soon anyway due to lack of staff
5 No Supply teacher/Temporary staff in their right mind will take up the offer of..."A days work..FREE virus included"

The government quite rightly place great faith in "Social Distance"...Schools remaining open is a contradiction of this

As Spock would say "Illogical captain !"

But a lot of children would need looking whilst not in school and this would often be :-
a) A parent who has a full time job. This means that the number of people providing services would be further depleted.
b) A grand parent, many of whom are in the "at risk" category.
c) A child minding circle with the risk of further spreading (remember measles parties in the old days).

In my daughter's case she could either stay at home (she is a Doctor) and is currently working extra unpaid hours because of the crisis,
or get us to baby sit. We are both in over 70 with relevant existing conditions, so she may be signing her own parents' death warrants.

There are no right answers, and plenty of "good" ideas that appeal to the layman.
The important thing is to take advice from experts and sing from the same hymn sheet.

Yes it is not clear cut but I maintain and to misquote post #3 about measles parties..
Schools are Covid-19 parties.
I worked for 40 years in secondary schools..Thus I know what children do (or not do !)
They also have to travel to and from school Ok now usually parents (or Grandparents ?) cars rather than buses and trains but still perhaps 30% on public transport

PS why did the so-called experts not "Ramp things up" say 3 days before ?
The rest of Europe just as bad..but note they have closed schools !

I understand other viewpoints and although I may disagree I do not "rubbish them" !

PS MPs asked not to work ! Not exactly but no minimal House of Commons !
Will their salaries /expenses be reduced N F C !

France is making provision for care of kids of health and other essential workers, so why can’t UK?

I repeat my constant criticism Too SLOW (Europe and UK !)

To slow. to do what. No one has any idea what is the right or wrong way to tackle this. It's a pandemic and a lot of people are going to get ill and die. One of the problems they have with a total lockdown is that the virus just sits and waits for everyone to stick their head out again and off it goes again.

So what would you do ..

What they have done but sooner..
Hence TOO SLOW.
The writing was on the wall with ITALY !

I inquired about cancelling my flights to Canada on 3rd March !

Easy to criticise I know but even easier when they get it WRONG

I am ahead of myself, Boris has just said we will do this. Forbearance said Martin Lewis...I guess I’ll have to practice it!

That's quite scary -if I understand correctly from the table, the over 80's have a predicted fatality rate of over 9% ! Nowhere on the BBC have i seen that stat mentioned...

Yep - always good to think positive :) I'm intending on hitting the road and doing a grand tour of nature reserves and the still open National Trust and English Heritage parks and gardens.

Methinks thought that the news people have been a bit remiss. Last week the stat of 1% fatality was bandied around a lot and I really don't feel that they have drawn enough attention to the greatly enhanced threat for older people. Possibly be intent that though - or am i getting a bit too conspiracy theorist? :)

Pretty much what we are doing. It may yet come that all none essential travel will be banned so we want to get out and about whilst we can.

I think Ral is right, none of us know exactly what lies ahead and we should fully expect a non-essential travel ban.
Could be lucky and not need it, but based on what has happened and is happening around the world we should be prepared to accept it.

To be fair, the education secretary was on the news this morning and he came across very well.
Day at a time. I have an image in my head of the government and its agencies as a big flock of swans looking all serene and composed on the surface while hundreds of feet are frantically paddling for all our lives underneath! :)🦢🦢🦢🦢:eek::eek::eek:

There will have been an overall COBRA emergency plan in place weeks ago to deal with all manner of scenarios.

The number of troops on standby has now been upped from 10,000 to 20,000.
I guess some of their tasks will be ferrying goods, medical supplies, bodies, as well as being on hand if there is any major civil unrest down the line, but I am hopeful British grit and our natural cultural reserve will make us all behave and get us through the really tough bits, fingers crossed🤞

And of that 9% how many will have ignored the self isolation advice. If talking to our customers is anything to go by, plenty of them.

So if everybody was taking it more seriously, and following the guidelines on the correct cleanliness regimes (which, by the way, most people still haven't got a clue about!), we could potentially up the survival rate even more :)

Got a friend I love very much, but who has her head completely in the sand over this situation.

Told me yesterday she was going to call in for a coffee this morning at the house of another very good friend who is currently in self-idolisation.

I was gobsmacked. Phoned the second friend to see if this was true and she said yes, she hadn't had the heart to say no (very caring person - and she was worried about the other friend coming to see her!).
Suffice to say I bollocked her for being so soft - her daughter had already given her a bollocking when she found out - and pleaded with her to cancel the whole thing. Thankfully she phoned this morning to say she had done so.

What the hell is it going to take before people start taking this whole thing seriously?!
