Battery shipment for warranty claim

Hi,
A warning regarding online battery supply- I have a Varta leisure battery which has failed within warranty and the supplier (Tayna) have asked me to return it for testing/replacement.

Unfortunately, it seems to be well nigh impossible for an individual to arrange shipment of a "car battery", even if it falls within the special provision that drops it out of the European ADR legislation (Disposition 598). I've yet to find anyone who'll carry it and I suspect that if I can the cost will be prohibitive. Effectively, therefore, the warranty is useless, as the item cannot be returned. The shipper requires a special arrangement with the courier company (which the seller will have but you won't) in order to carry such items.

The AA (members technical line) suggested I get a written test report and use that as evidence. I'll follow that up and let you know how it goes.

One thing that I would advise is retaining any packaging for a delivered battery, at least until the warranty expires. It's clear that packaging of batteries in transit is critical, so even if a supplier will arrange uplift for a return they will need it to be repackaged according to precise requirements (insulation, padding, sealing) or it will likely be refused.

Cheers,
W.
