Basic camera

Cannot see a problem. We have 3 on the front of the house. 2 pointing in opposite directions so we can see whats happening outside and one pointing down the side of the MH
The problem arises when the camera picks up views of other properties, especially gardens, bedrooms etc because you have no good reason to collect data on your neighbours' activities. There is no problem if your neighbours have agreed to the camera and its field of view. The man prosecuted couldn't see a problem; but the Police did. and the prosecution was successful

I have 5 cameras and a ring door bell, and 3 plus the door bell capture parts of the public road and parts of neighbours gardens.
My neighbours are quite happy as it also covers their cars too.
If it is illegal so be it, but stealing my vehicles to me is more illegal than my cameras capturing the public highway.
Several times now we have had police ask if we have captured things when things have happened to neighbours property, and not one of them has said I should change my cameras.
How many times have you seen on crime watch programmes where private Cctv has recorded cars or people on the public highways.
My next door nab tried pointing his cam at my drive to record me working at cars so as to tell the council, a letter from my solicitor soon made him move it away, compinsation soon followed for breach of privicy and my bad nerves LOL.

As I understood things it was an offence to have a camera sited so that you were recording someone else's property. We had one looking down the drive to front gate, it could see the tarmac lane a, opposite grass verge and hedge so was illegal,. But nobody ever complained. The law was there to stop people recording neighbours back gardens where there would be an expectation of privacy.....but it must be nearly 20 years ago that I installed the camera.
,maybe law has changed since.
Here is a link to the information on using the cameras. It seems that provided you tell you neighbours that they may be recorded and they agree there is no problem. If they don't agree, you have to adjust the camera so they are not in the recording view and of you cannot do that you should not use the camera.

Not necessarily. If you cannot avoid recording neighbours and your CCTV/sound is for a legitmate purpose (e.g. home security), you may continue. At the very worst, you'll need to undertake not to view the footage (other than occasional checks that the system is working) and routinely delete the footage once it is no longer required for the legitimate purpose.

From this ICO Guidance:

Data protection law says that people who capture images or audio recordings from outside their property boundary using a fixed camera, such as a CCTV camera or smart doorbell, should:
  1. tell people that they are using recording equipment;
  2. in most circumstances, provide some of the recording if asked by a person whose images have been captured;
  3. regularly or automatically delete footage;
  4. in most circumstances, delete recordings of people if they ask; and
  5. stop recording a person if they object to being recorded, but only if it is possible to do so. For example, if they can point the camera in a different direction but still use it for the same purposes, eg keeping their property safe.

The only observation I would make is that my car's dash cam records footage of people and properties all the time without their permission. In fact, it sweeps across probably 3 gardens every time I turn into my drive.
The rules for a fixed cctv style camera are different to recording from other styles of device/camera.

Still the rules for a domestic cctv are relatively few and easy to follow.
Best reading the links already supplied rather than some of the posts. :ROFLMAO:

We have four CCTV cameras up and a doorbell camera. Ours are Ezviz (made by Hikvision, one of the largest security camera manufacturers in the world). Not only is the quality great, they also don't need a subscription! They store video locally on an SD card. There is a free app and it works very well. There is a subscription if required.

We have one on our garage (shared drive) One inside the garage (workshop) to protect my stuff. One in the garden on the shed, to catch wildlife, including gutter rats that may climb over the back fence and one on the back of the house, gazing at the patio and gate. The doorbell cam looks down both sides of the drive, ours and theirs. It keeps watch on the habitation door of the moho and also next doors van. They are happy to have them up because they are protecting their property as well.

As for deleting the footage, we do review every morning. I usually delete all footage on all the cams if there is nothing nefarious going on, but the app deletes them after five days anyway. We have signs up on the house as well. The door cam takes video on the road, cars and passers by and has alerted up to probably five of six people acting suspiciously. (one was the boyfriend of one of the girls next door trying to sneak in the back garden!). We have supplied footage of incidents (we live on a large housing estate junction) to the police and they are happy for us to carry on.

Our security come before anything else. We live in a very low crime area, but can't be too careful.

Neighbour had their doorbell knocked last week.
Guess someone thought it was also a camera. It wasn't though.

I did wonder about that as they are accessible, I would think all doorbell cameras do this, ours has a tamper alarm. So if someone tries to take it, the alarm sounds on the ringer unit inside the house and the app. I haven't tried it, but I think the actual cam may make a sound too.
