banks charging for euro transaction fees...

Halifax clarity for me too, did notice the local ATM bank were charging me about £4 each time I withdrew cash in Thailand this year.
I normally pre-load the card before leaving UK with the amount of cash I'm going to take out as to avoid interest, and then use as credit card.

Another vote for Halifax Clarity, who always seem to top the polls for good exchange rates and no transaction fees. I've never been charged a fee for a cash withdrawal from a hole in the wall, so I'll need to look into that... either the terms have changed since I used it last November or perhaps this varies from country to country? I've only ever used mine in Ireland, Australia and Spain.

I haven't read back through the entire thread, so forgive me if someone has already said this but it's important when using a credit card to buy stuff overseas to always pay in the local currency, not in Sterling. You'll get a better exchange rate this way.

I also use a Nationwide credit card...

... no charges for purchasing in a foreign currency, and also a good exchange rate. In addition you also earn a small percentage on all your Sterling purchases, which adds up during the year and credited to you account annually.

It depends what type of account you have with Nationwide. Some accounts give you the above facility, but some don't. Check carefully.

Another vote for Halifax Clarity for purchases and Caxton FX to get cash. Some ATMs charge but you can cancel the transaction and go another one which does not charge.
