MORE help needed!! We have a back box fitted on our cycle rack, which extends a good two feet beyond the rear of the van. Should we have reflectors on it, and if so, does the shape of reflector matter??

Thanks!

Italy and Spain are said to be the sticklers for the 2' square reflectors. Both the same size but each has different width strips and one has an additional round reflector on each corner.

Don't know whether they insist on their own design but so far have assumed either will satisfy them

A good idea regardless of the country you are in.

Others fit a complete rear light and numberplate set up on the rear box and I imagine that would pass as well

Better safe than sorry there are always jobworth pople about, you can get a plastic one fairly cheaply on my website

Basicall as the projection is less than 1 metre you do not need anything in the UK. See http://www2.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roads/vehicles/vssafety/info-overhangingloads.pdf for more details.

However given some of the drivers on the road I would add some extra reflectors or even lights!! For reflectors have a look at any place trhat has parts for trailers, farm equipment dealers come to mind and choose some that complement your vehicle.

but dont put triangle reflectors on . they are only for trailers . you could end up with a pull.

Thanks to all of you for the information, I'm glad I asked, as I had no idea that the triangle ones were wrong for a back box!! As we have already found tractors are no respecters of MHs, we'll definitely get the back box plastered with reflectors if it keeps the bl**dy things away from us!!

Hi there, you can buy reflective tape, Red/Amber or White it is made by 3M, if I remember rightly it is sold by the metre ,I have used some on my motorhome, easy to apply and sticks like you know what !!.:idea-007::idea-007:

there are two types of red triangles . plain red and red with a white outer band . the white band ones are for use on heavy goods trailers.
