automatic ignition on gas fridge

Good old Tony Bywater!
hmmmmmmmm yeah right.....i think it will have to go there though,i definately wont take it to clwyd caravans :(

Yes........Your best bet is to take the fridge out.....I know this is a bit of a pain in the ......err.....butt.

But once it's out you can make sure that the burner and the electrode that ignites it are free of dust or anything that could short out the electrode.

This is exactly what a service engineer would do, then ignite the burner manualy.

If it works ok now....

....then the problem is the shorting out of the lead from the spark generator.......or a duff spark generator.

Check the insulation on the lead from the spark generator to the electrode.......the slightest flaw in the insulation can lead to the the spark running to earth.

The spark generator generates a very high voltage current and any 'leaks' from the insulation on the cable supplying the electrode can easily be seen in a darkened environment.....(draw the curtains)

Having done all that........if it still does not work ...then you do have a duff spark generator......

By now you will recognise the spark generator.......a little sealed box that the other end of the electrode lead plugs into........

So just get another one of them.........and then pat yourself on the back...........having not wasted £££££s on a service engineer.........

Fridge Ignition

Sam, just been reading the helpful replies. You mentioned the ticking sound when trying to ignite the flame. (No ticking noise and no light). It is definitely your switch. Is your frige an Electrolux?
Remove the knobs first from panel. Unscrew panel. Unscrew Ignition switch.
Pull out the wire from switch. Halfords or electrical shops sell them. I paid 98p for mine. Perhaps it may cost a few pence more. Replace it and put things back in reverse. It should work. If not, I'll take to booze instead of milk. :D. Crasy to pull everything out and making it a big job when it could be something simple.

Hi, David n' Anne.......True enough, the one thing I forgot to mention is that you need to make sure that power is reaching the spark generator........

However Samm. originally said that the ignition was working slowly........and that is one of the signs that the electronic spark generator is on the way out...

Cheers, JD.

it looks like its definately the spark generator, phoned up a company who said it'll be around £60 for a new one  but still cheaper than taking it to the dealers...your info was spot on & we also didnt have to take out the fridge as we got to it through the grille on the outside,it was easy as pie to get at it,so thanks for all that jondeau :D :D :D

ignition on fridge

hubby says it not one you can light with a lighter or match, guys, its the one like david and ann described...no clicking sound anymore and no light flashing??
Hi,If it is Automatic Ignition then a damp lead can cause a resistance that makes it think it is already alight. So no clicking when switched on.This usually happens in the morning,so if you try again later in the day it might work.Hope this helps, Kevin

good info thanks kevin, although its been tested and we have found it to be faulty :( wish it was fixable, but looks like we are gonna have to fork out the £60 for a new one

yeah we did try, well i may get round to posting a photo of it,get some help in finding one cheaper...prob post one tomorrow, cheers for that x :D

Most of these things are made by companys other than the fridge makers.......and you will possibly find other gas appliances including gas fires and cookers with the same generator.

It may well be that if you can identify the specific generator that you will find it available elsewhere for a much lower price.

It's the 'camping' tag that seems to add a premium to spare parts........or anything else for that matter.

For example have a range of these things, some with pictures, just type in spark generator into the 'Type Description' box.......don't bother with makers name or model

Why is that? If you go into any camping shop you will find items that can cost typically 50% more than in non camping shops!

I must admit that if we now require something costing a reasonable sum we factor postage costs in and purchase online as a little homework and a touch of nous will almost certainly save cash!

Ignition

Samm, As I said in my earlier post, before you spend your money, try flicking the switch a few times on and off. If that doesn't help, I suggest getting a switch only. I would rather loose a £ and 20 minutes of time before digging into your pocket for a larger amount
