Austria - Go Box??

Hi All,

We travel regularly to Slovakia/Hungary/Croatia (the lady wife is from Slovakia) and the blindingly obvious route is across Austria from Passau to Wien.

We've recently got a Burstner Elegance 820i, which, as you might guess, is 8.2 metres long, and is plated at 5.5 tonnes (or so - can't remember exactly). Anyway, it's way over the limit of 3.5 tonnes on Austrian motorways.

Can anyone advise on how to go about getting a Go Box, how much they cost etc, or alternatives? We can go via non-m'way route, but whilst scenic and attractive, it's also quite slow, and we have limited time to do the outward trip in.

If you enter Austria via the motorway I believe that you can get a Go Box at the first services in Austria or even the last in Germany, just the same procedure as buying the vignette for vehicles under 3500 kg. I've witnessed others purchasing them and topping them up as I've bought my vignette.

You load it with money and as it passes under gantries it deducts the tolls. When leaving Austria you can get a refund on the unused portion of your money. However, whilst I usually buy the vignette, which is a bit of a doddle, if I were over 3500 kg I'd be very tempted to allow a bit more time and avoid toll motorways so as not to have to get involved in the whole complex business of buying Go Boxes, especially if you're only transiting the country.

Edited to say: I think that you have to top it up with at least 75 Euro, or even 100, but when you hand it back as you leave you get the credit as I said. There may be a small charge for the box but if there is it is small, just a few Euro I think.

It's a while since I last took the motorhome through Austria, and my Go box in the back of cupboard somewhere, but I do remember that I bought it at the last German services on the Munich - Innsbruk road and had to produce the vehicle registration document.

Also the charge per KM is a lot more for a 3 axle van than 2 axle and I think your Burstner is the former like my Hobby? If so, it gets quite expensive! Mines is a Euro IV engine though and I guess yours is probably newer so a bit cheaper.

Thanks for all the info chaps. It sounds as if it'll be quite pricey if we do decide to use the motorways, as we're 3 axles and EuroIV. Still, you pays your money and you takes your choice I guess.

It'd be good if they got general European interoperability sorted out; at least then it would have a wider usage. Pigs might fly though, given current general Euro woes, both financial and political.
