Arrive late leave early

I have no interest in parking anywhere near houses. I wouldn't want someone camping outside my home. We usually find a spot around 4 or 5pm but very rarely leave before 10am. I find that if you park out of town even the dog walkers are careful not to wake you. We always stay only one night. We are in Essex at the moment and are finding it difficult to find W/C spots but are staying on a CL without electricity but water and chemical waste, we are the only van on an acre of ground deep in the countryside for £5 a night. Is it really worth looking any further?

I agree, antiquesam, we are not interested in parking in urban areas and also enjoy staying on the basic CL's. Trouble is, they are almost extinct. So many now have electricity etc. that we begrudge paying their fees when we don't want electric.

i'm a bit bemused by the humility of the whole idea of ' get there late leave early' .I have a legal vehicle and I was born here. if I decide to park where I am legally entitled to park, then that's my perogaative ,and if I decide to explore the boundaries a little by parking where some other human says I can't,then it's a tester.i can't agree with this scurrying about,i'm not ashamed or embarrassed to do what I do,au contraire ! I have the right to do it,and will keep on asserting that right,i always have, and never had much of a problem!

The general idea is to let sleeping dogs lie, but I think you know that.

Asserting one's "rights" is all well and good provided you don't upset people enough so that you lose those "rights" - which in many cases are only priviledges anyway. We have a right to drive on the highway, but no-one actually has a right to park on it, or in many of the public places where we choose to overnight.

We all know what happens when people abuse the opportunity to park on promenades etc, so why antagonise those that may be in a position to do us harm? What people don't see doesn't upset them. I am a great believer is going about my business quietly & unobtrusively if I can - and I am an extrovert.

Illegal Clamping!!

Clamping not legal in Scotland....assess the risk...most private car parks in Scotland are not "policed" by Police but by Local Authority/Council Parking Attendants/Traffic Wardens....so depends on times etc....calculate the risk...example....if restrictions are from 2300 hrs to 0700 hrs Saturday to Sunday, what's the chances of Parking attendants being on duty at 2300 hrs on a Saturday night....or 0700 am on a Sunday morning....particularly in smaller villages??? always the risk you get a ticket....we ask locals and if they dont mind then we've parked in these places for a couple of days, (moved van to go a run for a couple of hours)...Portree and Kilkreggan for instance..

I like to camp in the countryside and enjoy the scenery. I am not interested in parking in some shabby seaside town or industrial estate. It would therefore be a bit silly really to park up in the dark and leave in the dark and not enjoy the surroundings!

There is a sign in portree car park saying no overnight parking of vans etc but I think the lorry/coach parking bit is ok - ie in front of disused house where there is a permanent mh parked up?

Neither am i but i realise that people like to complain and they will complain and they will succeed in getting height barriers erected, no parking notices enforced etc etc. You only have to look around and you can see the evidence. Personally i would rather not risk more of this for the sake of being berligerant and exercising a right. No point shooting yourself in the foot just for the sake of it when there is an alternative.

oh i'm not being belligerent, but like Rob says, you won't be seeing me on some run down seafront or industrial estate,i'll be deep in the sticks as far away from people as possible, and any people who are around,i'll engage with and generally get on with. I always consider the people who come after me,even if it's only me coming back for another little stay, but i'm determined to be part of wherever I go,not some fleeting shadow !

which seems quite the opposite of your earlier post which implies I will do as I please and b***er the rest

err no,that wasn't quite what I meant. i'll stand up for my right to do this, but I won't be parking in somebody's front garden and hanging out my washing !

Yes I can appreciate what you thought you said and indeed I knew what you intended to say, but to a new member that would not be quite what they thought you said.

We have wild camped for 43 years and it was me actually that got the Highland Council to agree their No Overnight Parking signs were illegal, before this latest chap jumped on the thread but be fair indiscriminate motor home parking for more than one night does tend to alienate locals

I don't actually think there is any disagreement in principle, rather a different emphasis on how it is expressed. But, hey, I may be wrong, & the wife says I usually am . . .

I usually start the day fairly incoherent and get worse as the day progresses.my wife doesn't understand me.

NOW, there's a statement of the bleedin' obvious. They must be stupid these wimmin, they never understand us & we are dead simple & straightforward really. . . :cool1:

Grabs coat & runs for dog lead to disappear out of front door.

Wild Camping

Slightly off subject it does concern me that after 43 years of trouble free wild camping either overnight of just long rest stops for a meal and a stroll how many of the secluded spots we have used for years have been taken over by these dog*ers.
We have to think now before staying in certain layby's etc.
If I were a bit younger I would be taking a sharp pruning knife with me,

You're right there, we never understand you blokes, but I'd forget about the 'straightforward really', which only leaves dead simple.;):lol-049::lol-049::lol-049:

We have stopped in a few laybys that are either dogging sites or gay spots, but once they see the state of us two f*rts they stay well away, and as a lorry driver said to me the other day, if they are around until 2 or 3 o'clock then no one is going to nick your fuel.

That's not the case all eyes are on the bug*ers not on the sneaky ones nicking your fuel
