I was just thinking.....in all the time i jave had a camper...only once have i stayed on a site. Last year at minehead...october 3 days -£27. And it was not to bad...but dont think I will be doing it again lol.So how many of us regulary use camp sites and how many never do. Who are the purists and who are the part timers in this respect?

We're off down to Spain on Tuesday, travelling back for a month via Portugal and France. We haven't got a shower in the camper so we'll keep clean as best we can until we need a shower to stay socially acceptable. Then it's into a campsite to clean up and do the laundry.

Apart from that we'll wild as much as possible and use Aires when we need to service the van.

WE do have a shower ...but never use it in the van...takes to much water...we have strip down washes and get through a lot of baby wipes lol.Oh and we do have a solar shower thingy bag that we have used a couple of times

had a van for about 3 years now (caravan before that) and we have never use a camp site yet.! But i won't count it out not using 1 in future, but finger's crossed we may be able to avoid them.!

That suits me when I'm solo but SHMB has other ideas

We use sites more in this country, but try to mainly wildcamp. It's the filling and emptying I find difficult in this country. So much easier in France, only go on site to do washing really.

Had my hymer for couple months now never hit a site yet.had a bongo b4this, last site we used a site was at the gair loch sands site only because it was a bongo bash.done a lot of wilding with the bongo and when showers reqd we used town hall facilities and services facilities etc ,used to be a cc member when I had the cvan but got fed up with snobbery, over priced sites etc.just a few weeks ago the amount of waves from other mh drivers was very refreshing as we thought we got a lot of waves from fellow bongo owners.so I'd say look after where you wilding, ie no mess no stress for others,I carry hose that is food standard hose and fill the tank at petrol stations etc never been refused yet I always ask in a nice and proper manner as with the toilet emptieing.

We stopped on a site in Lake district as daughter wanted us to, 2005? £25 ish, bloody rip off, we don't do 'sites', as cannot justify wasting the money
to just park up for the night, as we wouldn't use their facilities, and don't like the rules or kids for that matter, that you get on sites. We do go to meets where they sometimes charge a small amount, or ask for donations to charity, but these are not registered camp sites. Much prefer wilding away from the hustle and bustle If I had young kids it would be different as the sites give them something to do.

In France etc, the Aires are fine they are generally very cheap, and very well looked after, so don't have a problem paying for their facilities, unlike rip off Britain.

puristish!

We were as pure as we could be until the grandkids arrived then we set aside one week in August when Nellie came with us and so we did campsites for that week only she did a lot of wilding with us but only at weekends. Now its a necessary evil as we use them to charge my mobility scooter 1 night in 3/4 if we are away for a week or more weekends never. When we do go on campsites its usually a farm site cheep and cheerful except when we do euro militaire in Folkstone September because of all the tin figures my other half brings then we stay at The Warren c&CC fabulous site below the white cliffs.

We have had a motorhome since 2010, we use it a lot and have only had 1 night on a site. That was only to recharge batteries and fill up with water. It was only our second outing then. Have learnt how to survive since.

nobody will be wildcamping or free camping before long we will all be herded and corralled in these aires

If we are away for a couple of weeks (longest we have done so far) we use a site around every three days, to shower and usually stay a couple of days to chill instead of travelling all the time. We can get the chairs and table out with a bit of room, take a trip into town or cycle.

I travelled 15,000 miles in my Boxer (almost-stealth) conversion in 2012, to the Northern and Eastern most bit of Norway and down to Tuscany. The van has no WC or shower, just a bucket-with-loo-seat for emergencies.

I stopped at a few campsites, pretty much only to use the washing machines when I ran out of clean clothes. In Italy, there had to be a few stops at official overnight stops, to avoid conflict with law & order. Other than that, it was a Wild Camping trip through and through.

Pure Wild

We have been motorhoming for the past eleven years and lived in one for 18 months. The only time we have stayed on a site was when Campbells Motorhomes paid for it as our electric consumer unit needed replacing under the warranty. We had to keep our dogs in the van as they were not really allowed on site. Too many rules and regulations to adhere to for us to stay on sites.

we have had 3 vans all in all ,1st was a split screen vw in the 70s 2cd was a talbot express auto sleeper and last but not least was our bedford compass drifter . and in all the time we had them we never used a camp site ,including the nigh on 2 years we lived in the bedford . only with the caravans we had did we use camp sites

i've heard these ''camp sites'' can be a bit expensive and regimented ? and people go on them willingly ?

hmmm

I can understand the needs of those without showers etc but I don't think it's something we ever intend to make plans for.
I quite enjoy the challenge of finding somewhere to take on water and empty the cassette.
Also, the thought of staying somewhere that just resembles a mobile housing estate with rules, regs and kids is not my idea of fun.

Well Ron and I are off on a trip on Monday, day at Doncaster Races and then up to Durham, even using POI I am a bit nervous of will it be OK, it wasn't too bad in Freda because she was smaller, so we are going on to a Parks Site and just chill out for a few days. We do go to lots of meets so at the moment that is the is as close as we get at the moment - but we will practice and one day we will be free (hopefully when we do Scotland, hopefully later this year)

never been on a site in 7 years of m/h a few councilors have told me where there are some:cool1:
