Are there any real wild campers on here?

It's warm in a skin shelter.

With a central fire, Finnish Laavus, native American Wigwams or Stone Age Round houses are quite snug in the coldest weather, although the drawback is that you acquire a sort of kipper aroma if you spend any time in them. When I was running Timecamp 2000 I was also going into my office daily to check email etc. and the novelty for my colleagues soon wore off when the odour pervaded the hole office. The plus side is that if you like smoked food you just hang your food from the ring beams ;)

i hate starting a sentence with'when i was younger'but what can you do?i travelled with only a sleeping bag for years and slept out nearly every night whatever the weather.you can find loads of large polythene covers behind furmiture stores, wrap yourself up and tear a hole to breathe through.i loved it. a point i'd like to make for people who haven't done it is that all the animals and creepy crawlies don't really bother you, they have their own agenda and you're not a part of it.i've slept out in cities and woods and have been investigated by night creatures many times, but they're nothing to worry about, just checking you out..at one with nature takes on a real significance when you realise there's hundreds of shooting stars, owl will answer you for hours if you hoot to them,in wooded areas and public gardens, hedgehogs, rats weasels all sorts of animals are snuffling about their business.bats don't get in your hair, earwigs don't crawl in your ears and rats don't bite your face!

hardship

me... I was raised on the hard shoulder of the the M1 in the 70's just short of Leeds Yorks, Spring and summer were a doddle. When it snowed me mam took pity on us 4 kids and found a shoe box for us to nestle in. Wild campers these days, never had it so good!

Talking of central heating, its amazing how quick you adjust to not having any, its only been 2 weeks since i moved into my van, on Thursday i stayed at a friends house for hook up and washing etc, i couldn't stand it in the house, my intentions was to stay indoors for some luxury but found myself drifting back to the van at 2 am for somewhere cooler, even the dogs were panting,

We grew up without central heating and Jack Frost on the inside of the windows in winter. Never really felt the cold.

Soft living now, but I'm sure too much (high) artificial heat in cold climates is bad for you.

I do like being warm though - must be my advancing years and old bones :lol-053:

So true Marie. I notice that as soon as the central heating goes on in late autumn, that's when the colds start (and of course the 'man flu').

we've only had central heating in one place we lived and we all got ill all the time, the next place had an open fire in the living room which at 25foot by 25foot with 11 foot ceiling [bloody georgians]was impossible to heat so it was sit round the fire with your face burning and your back like ice.all colds and snuffles cleared up. where i live now i have a woodburner in the living room and thats normally that

"Roughing it smoothly" is my motto. I like my warm cosy van with all mod cons and a Tempur mattress thanks! :sleep-027:
