Anyone used a Tefal 'Toast & Grill'?

My wife is rather taking by the Tefal toast and grill unit that is advertised in such places as Lakeland.
It would seem to be a very useful alternative to our (rarely used) oven when plugged into a camp-site power point.
I am a bit concerned that at 1600w it would be a greater load than anything else we use in the van. Also grilling some fatty foods in such a confined space would seem to create a cleaning nightmare
Has anyone used these, or similar, units?
Happy New Year to all

Culinary activities aside, Over Christmas I was on a CC site on EHU and I had both my halogen and oil fired radiator on to keep things toasty in the evening.

A combined wattage of 1800 watts and no unexpected events of electric tripping out etc.

Hi Powertrain,
1600 w is certainly a power greedy appliance, and you might find that on many sites, especially private sites, and continental sites you would 'trip' the power supply. Don't forget on top of that, you will probably still have the fridge running on electric, turn a tap on, have a light on, flush the loo, have heating on, and you will certainly be using more as well.
I personally would give it a wide berth, have a look at the the Remoska, also sold by Lakeland, at 470w, an absolute 'God send' to us motor-caravanners, it does anything an oven can do.
Hope this helps,

Jackie ;)

Thanks JLF I have no oven in my bus which at times is a pain, I think you may have just provided me the means of conjouring up a toad in the hole, onion gravy with mash and peas....How I yearn !!!;)

you will have no problem caravan club sites are mostly 16amp cl 10amp some 5amp .IF you add all your watts up that you would be using and devide by 230 IT will give you the amps EG IF YOU ARE USING 1600w divide by 230 gives you 7amp hope this is helpfull to you

wolly

We have a Remoska. Joan has been experimenting with Cakes, Scones, Pizza, Bread, Stews, Roast Chicken. We will be cooking Duck in it for new year.

We also run a George Forman Grill on our 1600watt inverter with no problems.

The Dolce Gusto tends to be a bit hesitant on the inverter but if we kick the Gasparini Generator on as well it copes very well.

We also have a Slow cooker and Safari Chef so on the grub steaks (stakes) we do very well

It depends where you are going to do most of your travelling - a lot of continental sites have as low as 2 amps - and 6 amps is common. As a general rule, we use electrical equipment that rates below a kilowatt and that way we have managed never to blow the system anywhere. Our George Forman grill, for example, is 750 watts and we wouldn't be without it.

I just long for something that will do my cheese on toast for brekky!!

The George Forman grill does wonderful toasted sandwiches!

John behave yourself, so far i find my self earmarking monies for a George Foreman grill and a Remoska oven.

Should I ever attend a wildcamp rest assured ...I will attempt to recoup the investment and flog you all bacon and sausage sarnies !!:D;)

Agree, I use a big old inverter, 3KW, and no problem. Just remember not to leave it on...Inverters are brilliant. Cant beat a huge leisure battery and huge inverter. Power is king...

Hello Powertraain,, quick question, don't you have an oven or grill built in? Over if not, do you use a genset? We keep adding stuff into our vans, but it all takes pulling.

Yep,George Foreman is now on my list along with an inverter!

I'm no culinary expert but ... would a Remoska or George Forman grill be any use for cooking frozen fish fingers and oven chips? I'm looking for something small and portable yet powerful. All my Roo his is a gas burner hob which is fairly useless for cooking (just like me!).

If we're going to use hookup we take our remoska. Use it at home in preference to the oven...

Dear Kangooroo,

If you cannot cook, then unless you are willing to live off junk food (and die young) you depend for your very existence on a female member of the human race.

Pull yourself together man (you are not a woman are you:eek:) and learn to fend for yourself. Be an independant man (bugger female equality).;)

BTW my wife is insanely jealous of my Yorkshire puddings but I refuse to tell her the secret. :D

If you are going to live on fish fingers and onen chips then there is another option. Go to the local chippy and save yourself the hassle of cooking altogether.

Yes you can do oven chips and fish fingers in a Romoska but it will need to be pre heated first according to Joan.

A Romoska is not a slow cooker. It needs to be preheated like an oven and Joan tells me it takes the same time to cook a cake in one as it does in a conventional oven. The only difference is the heating element is in the lid so it cooks the top faster so in some cases the food in the top needs covering for a while.

I've looked at the Halogen ovens, but they use a 1300w halogen bulb, so once again a no no on continental sites, and even some private sites in U.K. are stingy with their electric. You would be o.k. on Caravan Club, or Camping & Caravan Club sites
The Remoska is. definitely not a slow cooker, it takes only the same time to cook as any ordinary oven would.

Jackie;)

I too have seen this Halogen mallarkey, but I fink this remoska and the fact that it can do toad in the hole has to be a winner for your dinner!!!.

Sponge cakes, etc ...I feel 119 quidlies leaving the bank imminently.
