I remember a time when CB wasn't legal and had quite a high profile. Part of the attraction seemed to be it wasn't legal! Wasn't there a massive craze at one time in the early 80's? Now it seems to have been overtaken by mobile phones, texts, and emails. In fact I thought that hardly anyone used it nowadays.

yes that was the time i got mine . it was supposed to be a big offence if you was caught using a c.b then .illegal transmitting over the air waves and owning an ilegal radio transmitter if i am not mistaken it came under some home office ban or something as it was supposed to be on some sensative band blah blah set off intercontinental ballistic missiles sort of thing, bringing nueclear armagedon to the world to here them talk ,just an excuse to stop the british public from enjoing themselves as per . ssems as if its still popular http://www.cbradiotalk.com/ sorry that seems to be usa based http://www.thunderpole.co.uk/forum/

30 years of CB in UK

It is the 30th anniversary of legal CB in the UK tomorrow. Dig out your old rig may find some long lost buddies or "seat covers" (girlfriends):cool1:

The 30th birthday net on channel 30 between 1900 and 2100 hrs is planned. see here

The way the ionosphere is at the moment you'll be able to hear the good buddies over the pond if you've still got an AM/SSB rig with a burner and big twig!!

The ten meter Ham band has had quite a few openings over the past few weeks. can get across the pond on 10w SSB

PS for those that understand, been able to work QRSS to W4 on 150 mW to a loaded dipole in the loft

Ah yes, just found this thread!

I used to have a rig in the car when I was on the road a lot more in my job. Back then I live in Lincolnshire and the flat land was pretty good for uninterrupted signal. Occasionally, when the skip was right you'd get continental breakers popping up too. One good reason for me having one then was the helpful directions you would get in a strange place from local breakers — "1-9 for directions". I remember a guy in Leicester waiting for me to eyeball him then leading me to the part of town I needed to be. That's what it was like then, people keen to help one another out.

I'm afraid I don't have the rig any more so here's Globetrotter with a big 10-10. We down, we gone!
