Just a bit curious but are any campers out there on the c.b.
we are planning to put in a rig (c.b.) and was interested to know how many people out there in their campers are already on the c.b.

Me occasionally:) Never here any campers though:rolleyes: Shame really can be quite entertaining and useful. Beats listening to the commercial local radio stations those infuriating adverts:mad: The only station worth listening to these days is Jack FM, but I digress.

I listen on CB channel 19 UK while I am on the road and it is as dead as a dodo 99.999999999% of the time.

Amateur Radio repeaters seem to be going the same way.

i got my rig still in mine... not like the good old days though :(

i still have am and fm . but these days its so cheap to carry walkie talkies we use them when travelling in a group. better for going into maroc as they look like telephones .if the customs see cb,s they like to take them off you on entry to maroc. aldi and lidl do some good wk/ tks sometimes and very cheap. cheers alan.

glad to see there are still a few cbers out there ... maybe we should start a new trend lol
we got a new one now so will have that set up soon ... we thought it would be handy if needed to get your head down for a night in maybe say a truck stop ... just got to get a guttermount now as i don't think a magmount will be any good on fibreglass lol

who's up for it a new cb revolution hehe

trucks used to use a twin mirror mount system. wasnt too hard to set up.

We are getting our first motorhome very soon, selling up and going fulltime. We have thought it would be a good idea to have a cb radio for both entertainment and safety reasons. What have you all decided to use? AM or FM?
In one of the earlier messages, the writer mentions maroc, whatis maroc?
Sorry to appear stupid, but we are new to this and still learning.
Thanks

Curious as to what makes you use? I always found battery life appalling on the cheap pmr 446 hand held radios. Also you said you use them while travelling is that van to van? Do you need an extension mic then? I mean plod could argue you're using a mobile phone:eek: (I know fist held mics are exempt)

hi the ones i use now came from aldi i think. they are twintalker 4710dcp they came with a mic to clip on your shirt and a button to press and from another set we have voice activated gear. but we also hold it and talk . there is very often 4 of us in trucks vans and we all have them .they all seem to use the same channels and you can split them between channels. usually they last a few days then charge them up. i have an inverter in my cab so power them on 240v these need to sit on their charge block to charge but i had a set stolen that came with a lead to plug into each radio. they are also good when the women go off shopping etc. its amazing how many going abroad have them. also have a good range upto 5km. but cant say if its true .8 channels 38 sub channels. good enough for camper to camper. cheers alan.

we just bought a midland 80 channel am/fm .. it is a euro one .. you are only allowed to use fm in the uk but if you go abroad you can find the other frequency on am (if you can speak their language) it does have germany, italy, europe, spain, france and poland listed as to where you can use it

or you can just get a straight 40 fm specific to the uk .. they all usually come with brackets so you can just put them anywhere you feel appropriate for youselves

just chose your twig (aerial) wisely if you have a fibreglass body i don't suggest a magmount (big round magnetic base which the aerial screws into) as you will have no metal to attatch it to

hope i helped

Cb ?

I thought the old AM ,was back ' in ' and legal again now,in UK ?as they have changed the regs and frequencies.I have both the old AM set and the newer/old FM sets ,but dont know how to set them up ??
I also have the small walkie/talkies which are handy if in convoy or walking around a town or market etc,but find that once out of range, which can be as little as a Km and the most 5 km,then their not very good,as the CB sets were far more reaching ,FM being not so good ,as my AM set in the old days, fitted in me SL Viva ,with large mag pole/firestick on boot, could pick up all England and France, from my local Welsh mountainand i'm sure further afield.
it might catch on again ,but hopefully just with truckers and motorhome users, otherwise the airwaves get so full, especially with kids,it gets very tedious or silly.
Fitted mine,power on,but when i key mic,nothing,but the dial shoots up,no sound ?i haven't a swr meter ? Anyone know what i can do ?

Hi barnybg

have you turned your squelch right down .. and it's supposed to go quiet when the mic is keyed as it cuts off the speaker while you are talking .. noise should come back when you unkey .. would suggest swr ing it in tho

hope that helps

AM sets are still Illegal in the UK.

Old CBs have just 40 channels but the newer ones have 80; 40 UK and 40 CEPT, the latter being a European standard. A recent development are multi region CBs which also have other European country's channels available. The benefit of these is you can take them on holiday with you and set them to the country you are in

There was a proposal to remove the 40 UK-specific CB channels from CB use in 2010, retaining only the 40 pan-European channels. It looks like this is not now going to happen.

The New multi region European standard
Bands Covered are

UK - 40 FM UK & 40 FM EU - 4W FM
DE - 80 FM & 40 AM - 4W FM / 1W AM
PL - 40 FM & 40 AM - 4W FM / 4W AM
EU - 40 FM & 40 AM - 4W FM / 1W AM
EI - 40 FM & 40 AM - 4W FM 4W AM

New sets such as the Team TS6 Multi cover all the legal channels.
See it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzY2M_7d2h0
This guy has videos of other available sets as well.

At £69.50 from Rocket Radio in the UK is it worth trying to put some of the old CBs from 1980s back in the air.
Modern CB antenna come preset so do not need to have the SWR set.
Here is an example for fibreglass bodies

Here is a good link covering everything you need to know about installing CB's in motorhomes.
