Anti-social Behaviour Bill

NOW is the time to write to your MP about this new threat to simple wild parking .

This proposed legislation would effectively make it possible for courts to ban anything which could cause a nuisance to anyone, however unreasonable the person making the complaint is.

The currently Bill carries no requirement for a complaint to be "reasonable".

Ten years ago, naturists successfully lobbied in large numbers for amendments to the Sexual Offences Bill, which resulted in substantial changes in our favour by the time it became law.

Make sure that Wild Parking does not become illegal if it causes a nuisance to anyone, however unreasonable the person making the complaint is.

The Bill will have completed the committee stage by 16th July so please contact your MP NOW

Have any other organisations (like 38degrees, say) picked up on this threat to civil liberties? With the greatest respect I fear my (elderly, anti-European & very conservative) MP will see naturists as a weird fringe group & not respect any communication from a group representing their interests. I can write as an individual, but that too has little impact - especially as he probably knows by now (from previously ignored requests for action) that I would never vote for him as long as I have a hole in me bum.

I think you have picked up the point wrongly Smaug.

The naturist example was to show that thinks can change if you contact your MP.

The point I was making was if someone who did not like or understand Motor Caravans he could complain and get them banned from parking anywhere.

I have such an example with North Warwickshire Borough Council.
I contacted them about Motor Caravan Parking not just overnighting.

I received the following reply

Dear Mr Thompson,

Thank you for your recent e-mail in connection with Motor Caravan parking within North Warwickshire Off Street car parks.

Unfortunately our Parking Order does not allow for any camping, caravanning, sleeping or cooking within our car parks, so we are unable to offer any parking arrangements across the Borough.

I hope this clarifies the position for you.

Regards,

Howard Taylor, Parking Manager

North Warwickshire Borough Council

I again contacted him as below

Hello Mr Taylor

Motor Caravans are used for transport not just accommodation. They are the persons transport while visiting, unlike touring caravan users who can leave the caravan behind on a site and visit your town in the tow car. Are you stating that people using motorhomes as transport are not welcome in North Warwickshire Borough Council area as visitors. They spend money and visit attractions just like other people.

Motor Caravans have insurance, Road Tax and MOT like cars. Touring caravan do not carry compulsory insurance and rely on the towing vehicles insurance. I can appreciate that you would not wish people towing a caravan to occupy the car park.

He has just replied

Dear Mr Thompson,

Thank you for your comments. Unfortunately as previously stated, the Parking Order does not permit caravans within our car parks, this has been the policy that has been in place for a number of years now and it is not likely to change in the near future. We are a small market town where we are one of the few authorities that offer free car parking. Our car parking capacity is very limited, and therefore we have had to focus on the needs of our local residents, and therefore it would not really be an acceptable situation reducing the current capacity that is available by allowing caravans etc on these car parks.

Regards,

Howard Taylor, Parking Manager

This man does not seem able to, or want to, tell the difference between a trailer Caravan and a Motorhome. It is typical of some of the replies I have received from council officers. He could easily make a complaint about Motor Caravans and get it made illegal to park a Motorhome anywhere in his borough.

This is why the reasonableness clause in the bill is essential.

Sorry, I do see the risk to civil liberties & I am seeking a group thro which I could protest as I fear a single voter (especially one with a known history of protesting) will carry little sway with my current so-called representative at Parliament.

I have found that some journalists have raised the issues & that Liberty are tracking the bill, but sadly, I have not yet found an organisation that I could support & promulgate.

We are always more powerful when we band together than when we stand alone.

Motor Caravan Tourism Organisation has just been established to act as a pressure/lobby group. Individuals setting up petitions will get nowhere if we band together then we MAY be able to influence policy at local and national level. Tourism is taken more seriously that just a motor caravan owner or group.

Just added my details

Have been reading your post and just signed up for the petition on the motor caravan tourism organisation.
took the number up to 40 people registered, not looking to good for this petition.

Squibby.

John Thompson, I thought I would have a quick look at site - is it one you have to pay for. I thought I had registered on it before - says my user name is already taken, but then when I tried to log in, it said user blocked ?? any ideas
