Aluminium Roof

Hi all,

I have an Euramobil 635ls 2002 with an aluminium roof.

It seems to be floating rather then bonded all over. It only seems to be fixed at the edges and where the roof lights and A/C unit are fitted.

Does anyone know which it is?

I would like to fit a solar panel but I'm concerned if I only glue it to the aluminium it might not be good enough to or safe. Any thoughts?

Should I only use a flexible solar panel that is lighter and has more contact area?

Should I try and bond the roof beneath the normal panel brackets as I fit the roof?

I have asked Euramobil for advice as well.

All advice welcome.

Thanks

Rod

Also the bond is only as good as the paint adhesion .if you go flexible read photonic universe fitting advise it is very easy to damage a flexible panel during fitting .

Alan at aandncaravans has done a bit of research into fitting panels. Have a read of this

Solar Panels detaching from Motorhome roofs

It may give you a few ideas.

Some vans DO have a 'floating' roof where the outer skin is not bonded. I believe this is to stop deformation due to expansion when it is hot.

Just a cheap way to build roofs the same as the caravan industry have done for years. Alloy sheet over the top of wood with a bit of insulation and a bit of seal down the sides. Bend the metal over the edges and fit a trim. Would not want to walk on it though. You can see the construction method on some of the youtube videos. I suppose your best bet is to screw it down but whats underneath and will it hold and you are also putting holes in the roof which is not a good idea. They fix roof lights by cutting a hole and then seal the roof light on the top but I wonder if they put any screws in. Stick on ones may be the answer but they don't seem so reliable as there is nowhere for the heat to go. This could also cause a problem with the roof covering getting hot and moving
