Ajay - Our LoLoader Luton self build.

Sounds like you are going to need to. SVTECH I think are the ones most use for up plating. Sometimes you can go to 3850kg without upgrading anything but if you are hanging e bikes off the back you may need extra payload on the rear axle. Depends where it is now when you weigh it. I generally weight the whole van and then each axle to find out where I am at.
You nailed it Barry - SvTech have a good reputation as do Van Weight Engineering. The latter does the job for under £300 total, not sure about SvTech.

My brother is going through the process at the moment with SvTech, here are the details of his upgrade including the cost;

Thank you for your enquiry,
I am pleased to confirm that we can uprate your vehicle and have carried out full dynamic brake test results on a precedent vehicle to achieve a new GVW.

For the uprate to 3700 kg there are no physical changes required.
For the uprate to 4000 kg an air assist kit would need to be fitted to the rear axle, and would increase the rear axle to 2240kg.

For the uprating element, we supply a converter plate, which would be unique to your vehicle, and a letter of sign-off to be used with the DVLA.
Inspection of the vehicle will be at the discretion of the DVLA though motorhomes and non-fare collecting vehicles are usually exempt.

The axle weights of the vehicle post conversion will be:-
3700 – wt kg ; Axle 1 = 1960 kg ; Axle 2 = 2000 kg
4000 – wt kg ; Axle 1 = 1960 kg ; Axle 2 = 2240 kg (minimum load index 112)
(This is the max weight the vehicle has been tested to go to, and there are no further increases available.)

Once uprated you will need to inform DVLA of the change on your logbook.
This is a paperwork exercise, though it will need to be dealt with at the main Swansea DVLA office.
The registered keeper is the only person who can make these changes, but we will provide the necessary documents and instructions on how to contact them.

Once completing the process with us, in the pack we provide you will find...
  • A new Svtech converters plate (to be used alongside the existing vin plates)
  • Instructions on fitting the new VIN plate
  • Two copies of a weight certificate
  • The form needed to make a weight change with the DVLA
  • And instructions on how to contact the DVLA

When you are ready to proceed, we will need to know which weight option you require and see the relevant proof of fitment dependent on the option you choose.
If you have already made the required changes for a higher uprate, you do not need to get them again, we just need to see evidence that they have been fitted.
(e.g. photo of the invoice or photo of the changes fitted to the vehicle)

SVTech do not have workshops, and it is the owner's responsibility to arrange these changes.

The cost for all options for the supply of converters plate and sign-off only will be £290.00 + VAT

Please reply to this e-mail to respond.

Kind Regards,
Sean

Something that might be important to you or to consider .... My Fiat Ducato original plate had a GVW of 3500 with a second weight (i.e. the GTW) of 6000. So in other words a towing limit of 2500Kg.
When SV Tech did my new plate (with GVW raised to 3850), they significantly reduced the towing limit down to 1040Kg. This was incorrect (and in fact would have likely prevented me from getting a 'toed' car should I have wanted to).
The issue was I think a combination of a typo on a Autotrail Brochure and SV Tech not fully (IMO) researching the vehicle details. To resolve this, I (the customer) had to check the technical details with the vehicle supplier in order to ensure the new VIN Plate had the correct numbers on. While all ok at the end, it shows the importance of knowing your own details and making sure others are aware also and not just accept what is given.

If you are interested how the VIN Plate would look/differ post upgrade, here is my example (old then new, (issued after corrections applied)).
