Advice On Buying A New Computer Please

Not too sure about that mybroadband.co.uk link, 2 tests, 1st 1.JPG shows a download speed of 103Mbs far higher than the actual speed. 2nd test same tester 92 Mbs down and 8.94Mbs up2.JPG
my preferred tester speedtest.net is much closer to the actual speed 0f 37.39Mbs down and 9.37 Mbs up 3.JPG My estimated speed by isp is 50Mbs down.

And how much has your computer been protected by Microsoft

Ignore this idea of don't use XP, most corporates are still running XP and will continue to run XP as there is no commercial gain to go to later versions and its expensive to upgrade.I know large companies still running 2000. If you want cheap and warranted see the link below, they have a full range from XP onwards

Don't go to windows 8 or 8.1 , 7 is good. Its XP like unlike 8

The advantage of 7 is that you can use the full power of a modern PC by using a 64 bit version which allows you to have over 4gb of memory. Warning, some of your old apps may not run on 7

have a look at Morgan Computers - for cheap computers, printers, digital cameras and accessories

Why do you say don't use Win 8?

Win7 was basically Vista plus service packs and I understand Win8 is an enancement of Win7. I use a 64bit version of Vista with service pack 2 (plus various Win7) it's very good but has bad reputation from earlier releases.

Edit: Vista can also use 4gb plus of memory when using the 64bit version.

I think Windows 8 is great, 8.1 is even better, all our laptops are running Win 8

When Win 8 first came out I tried it on a laptop but didn't like the metro interface and just joined in the critisism of it, but about a month or so ago I tried it again but on a touchscreen laptop and having bought a Nexus 7 tablet the month before, Win8 suddenly made a lot of sense, it was quick and a joy to use on the i7 laptop. Switching between Metro and the Desktop is just a touch of the screen or keyboard. I would have no hesitation about buying it for use in the future. I understand the changes made in Win8.1 further enhance the usage.

very noisey sys ,to much ping ponging ,no back button on brouser and you have to pay for it.

Instead of removing the hard-drive (and then wondering what to do with it), what's wrong with simply completely destroying all the information on it using Darik's Boot and Nuke (DBAN)?

For anyone interested, DBAN is free and can be downloaded here: Darik's Boot and Nuke | Free System Administration software downloads at SourceForge.net but it can be read about here: Darik's Boot And Nuke | Hard Drive Disk Wipe and Data Clearing

A hammer is the best way of deleting data, totally non techie

And what browser would that be? There was a back button on the version of IE in Win 8 that I tried on Friday.

This one basically for budget practical advice.

You will get various devotees singing the praises of Macs, Linux and various other things which all have their good points, but basically you want something as standard and as compatible as possible.

I only wish that I knew/understood what on Earth you are all talking about.

Burning Puppies, Duck Ducks etc. - I didn't think that was still legal; mind you we only gave up burning the odd Witch or two fairly recently down these parts.

Seriously, my thanks for all your thoughts & contributions. I'll have to take time to carefully go through all your advises - & perhaps send one or two of you a PM (I'll be travelling & off line for a couple of weeks now). I've never heard of this Lennor stuff that some of you use but your reviews seem very enthusiastic. I think line speed here is about 5 clunky bits a second or millisec or whatever so that isn't the problem - it's this big box thing on the floor that I think has got a real problem because it is getting worse & worse almost daily (just my layman's opinion). Season's Greetings to You All.

You should get a job at PC World.
