A warning to all you sleepy campers!

I've seen a similar thread on other forums concerning Macdonalds and Tescos doing the same thing. The advice given was that legally you are not obliged to tell them who was using your vehicle at the time and to simply not pay.
Presumably the DVLA pass on your details to these parasites (doubtless for a fee) whatever happened to our privacy laws?.

Interesting how I deserve contempt ???

Seems you dont like your opinion questioned ( which displays your arrogance in a better light than mine)

Thankfully I can read.... and your post suggested cocking up an ANPR system to defraud paying parking charges.

This post is the first time you mentioned government subversiveness.

BTW I take it we wont be sending Xmas cards.. ;)

Channa
If you hadnt been dipping into the sauce to much again, last night Channa you would not have mixed my post up with Hymermans thread. You know that, I know that, and so will everybody else who reads the thread from the beginning. Once again your supercilious attitude has bolloxed you up(sorry about that word, I,m thick).
Who the hell else would record number plates "longer in places like London", than the government, or their agents. Read prima facia dont interpret.
You can put it on record that I would do anything within my meagre power to corrupt any method of subversive surveillance......Bob

I really don't think that M'Way services were originally intended to rip off the public, quite the reverse in fact. We have only ourselves to blame for allowing this to happen and I for one take back whatever I legally can from these Rip off merchants.

How anyone can condone their tactics amazes me. The price they charge for parking warrants a full time attendant to collect the fee and more importantly provide security. Anyone thinking the stealth tactics employed by these companies to 'fine' people who pull up for a rest and don't see the boards displaying there exorbitant parking fees is fair should have a wee think about it.

I tried to do the "right thing" once and park overnight on Taunton ,I'm an ex trucker so know the score, went in to pay the £14 and was asked for reg no etc, "can I have my food token please?" , er, no your not a truck,! "but I want to pay the truck price" , sorry its just for trucks, "stick it up yer bum I'll park in the layby on the next exit" , they don't deserve any custom.

Not an 'ex' trucker for a few years but I still wouldn't pay to park in these dumps. I only eat there with the free meal vouchers given out with the fuel and even then I usually have one of the King's burgers. At least they are heated up when you order them unlike the Moto muck that sits under hot lights for many an hour.

I think the charge is meant to discourage people from stopping longer than 2 hours, I for one wouldn't be willing to pay 18 pound. I think it's for 24 hours as well, who on earth would want to stay on a motorway service car park for 24 hours???????? If the charge was reasonable even at the same rate of 18 pound for 24 hours that would work out at 75 pence per hour (still expensive) but if your tired then 8 hours would be 6 pound.
I wonder what happens if you just ignore the notice to pay? It's not a criminal offence so would they take you to court for 18 pound? Maybe we should get a fund to fight a test case on the charge being unreasonable.

When I recieved the ticket it did say that if I paid with 10 days that they would reduce the parking charge from £80 down to £50. So if I didn't pay straight away up goes the charge, plus they also added that if you don't pay that they add on other administration fee's. Also given that I'd been hit by the charge on the way up as well as when I returned the bill could have gone through the roof.

I must admit I've learned my lesson about parking at a MOTO Service Station, but given that I was so sleepy that I felt I was becoming a bit of a danger to others on the motorway.

I know some people feel that this is private land and we must pay, but there has to be a fare payment in return for a fare service. I realise that these places are geared to making money, but just like anyother car park the price to stay per hour could be graded and you could get a ticket as you come in and then pay for the time you've spent when you leave.

I just hope that through starting this thread that someone will avoid falling into the same hole I did and if that happens, then it all been worth it...

As always with these things there are more questions then answers.....

Andy :)

Personally I think that it is outrageous that these charges apply. The original idea of services on motorways was to provide a place that drivers could use to remain fed and rested where necessary, they are now discouraging the very things that they were initiated for.

I also hate the surveillance mentality that we now live in. Registration details should not be made available to these companies.

I think that the best way to fight back is simply a mass boycott of places like Moto. The only thing that they understand is loss of income.

If they are to be allowed to continue with their legalised thievery alternative free rest areas should be provided on motorways for safety reasons.

There is some real intersting stuff going on here isnt there.
I've always been wary of these places and have taken risks a few times by stopping for the night and not paying.
Its wrong of course to alter the identity of your number plate or just changing a number/digit with black tape but its and old trick and does work.
I would do it!

These placea are all about money and you are a sponge so there going to take every penny off you possible.

But I do like the idea about a test case. and wondering if they really could take you to court! - or not! (Bullies arnt they!)

We could boycott these places but theres not enough of us to make a difference.

so, I dont know what the answer is really.

But its a great topic. what can be done?

Craig

:DHave a meet in one of there 'SERVICE' areas? :D

Great idea! I could just see the service areas jamed full of vans & Trucks, not buying anything and staying for just under the 2hrs then moving on the the next service station, as the next lot move in and do the same. Is this possible???? It would make some people think..........

Not Illegal

It could bring some attention and certainly not illegal. I think we would be up for it  unless someone else points out why we absolutely should not :D

Worth a look at 'public right of way' and the relevent section of the 'road traffic act'. Private land with public and traffic access are covered by both acts. It would seem that a 'convoy' could be illegal in some circumstances and you can bet your bottom dollar that some tricky, overpaid 'suit' would come up with a way of stopping you from doing a 'mass park in'
Most of the restrictions placed on parking in places such as you mention, are to stop 'travelers' moving in. there is also the 'Bums on seats' aspect. The site management would say that 2 hours is a generous amount of time for the use of the facilities.
I don't want to appear as a pedant, but if the regs are posted where you can see them, then you have no option other than to respect them regardless of how petty they are. We can of course 'boycot' the places that are run by greedy, money grabbing bar****ds!
Here endeth the second lesson!....Paul.

Yes! it would make people think! it would make them think:
"motorhome owners are a bloody nuisance, taking up all that space, blocking up the service area so I can't get parked and I'm bursting for a pee and now I'm going to have to drive another 20 miles at least to the next services if I make it without wetting myself - they should ban the bloody things off the road".

I interpreted Hymerman's original post as " I made a mistake here boys and girls, it nearly cost me a lot of money - be careful you don't make the same mistake as I did"

It was a good warning to us all - break the rules and it will cost you, don't break the rules and it will not.
It's a bit like people who whinge about getting caught on speed cameras - if they didn't break the speed limits (read law) they wouldn't get fined.
Let's not get paranoid life's too short

We should always remember a very famous saying, "Rules and regulations are for the guidance of wise men(and women), and the blind obedience of Fools", that is how I live my life. Here endeth the third lesson......Bob
