A question for the phone geeks

I'm using the EE SIM recommend by Greg and Rob from "Pack the van and go", this hopefully gets round the fair usage problem.

I've not tried it yet with iPlayer but is working well in Spain (so far).
Thanks xsilvergs, very interesting. If all I'm looking for is to connect one device (other than my phone) to the net, what's advantage of using a mobile router over simply switching on a hotspot on my phone?

When I connect to the VPN it immediately turns off my wifi on the laptop.
if you click on the wifi icon (bottom right) then click on the properties link. When it opens make sure that the network profile is set to private not public then give it a a try and let us know whether that works or not.

Regards,
Del

@RichardA Greg's video has a link to EE and the SIM that many use the get data etc while roaming without the "fair usage" limitations of many others.

The router is a router but isn't required to get data while roaming.

Thanks for your reply. Yes I have updated Windows. I have the same problem on the laptop wherever I am connected to wifi whether at home on sfr fibre optic or on my girlfriend's orange WiFi. It always turns off my WiFi straight away.
Does it actually do what you state and turn off the WiFi, or does it leave the WiFi on but prevent it from connecting to the router?

Yes and as soon as I restart the wifi it disconnects it again.

Thanks. Yes I have tried changing it private but it still turns off the wifi.

A very strange problem!
Antivirus or the like on the laptop ? (spyware malware windows defender ?
I have been advised with other vPN s to do this
you have isolated the problem it seems
Try another laptop ? or PC ?
Drive to a macdonalds and try their wifi
Try tethering your laptop too your phone !
Bingo!! I have tethered my laptop to my phone and it works! They are both connected to the VPN at the moment and I have gone straight to iPlayer on my laptop and it is working. Thanks for the suggestion. It is fortuitous as we are about to run out of data on the router sim and it doesn't renew until 3rd of January but the data on my phone has just renewed on 23rd December. I have 100 ggb on the phone when in France but this reduces to 50 ggb when abroad.

Good to know that you've found a workaround.
For the longer term, have you tries contacting support? : https://www.ukexpatvpn.com/support/
Do you have the option of trying an ethernet connection to your router?

Yes I was in touch with the support team and they were very helpful. I probably hadn't exhausted their expertise.

I may have already tried using my ethernet connection but will continue to look at all options including speaking again to support. They are after all getting mu monthly sub!
