When (and hopefully if) we get away for our 3 month trip to Italy we plan to get an Italian TIM prepaid SIM card for our mifi. I’m thinking of a VPN, the question is will this mask our Italian location from the likes of BBC and NETFLIX while using an Italian SIM? And if so which VPN is most suitable…and economic?

Expat VPN is the only one that I have found to work reliably.
Unfortimately vpn can confuse BT email . They Appear to think that your account has been compromised as so hoops have to be negotiated.
I do not know if a tethered device will use the vpn which is on say the phone
My solution would be to install the vpn on the tethered device such as laptop or tablet where you also have a bigger screen.
I prefer to use iplayer and download the program and play it from the download and avoid bufferring.
I have found that although downloading needs vpn, playback does not !

Yes I think provided you use the vpn on the connected devices.

I do not think you can instal the vpn software on the mifi.
I have not tried and I see no need to !

I've no problem with getting BBC abroad using my Vodafone sim . Do have a problem with getting my football teams games as I don't appear to be abroad !
Life is complicated

Vodaphone amd most uk sims are ok as they are uk based.
The problem is as the OP asked with a foreign sim or indeed a foreign wifi

For a 3 month trip I need to consider alternatives with providers bringing in ‘fair usage’ limits and expensive daily charges.
After being pursued by several debt agancies due to Vodaphone’s incompetence (for which they finally paid compensation) I vowed never to touch them again.

I too had a major problem with vodaphone.
Errors by them and a 2nd sim card whicj I never had
so 2 x debt collection agencies all sorted but no actual confirmation !

Maybe get a 2nd uk sim card from a different provider and activate it in UK
Then do not use it until the 2 month fair usage is up on the first Simcard

I france once I used Orange £30 for a months unlimited wi-fi distributed by their phone network!

I have used Express V P N with no problems for two years. BBC is perfect and also Ziggo, a Dutch TV provider works when we are in UK and want to watch Dutch TV.
You can have 5 devices with one account.
If you are using your phone as a HotSpot and watching TV on a tablet then do not have the VPN connected on the phone only on the tablet. We have done this with one tablet connected to UK for BBC and another one connected to The Hague, Holland for Dutch TV at the same time when in Portugal with no problems.

I'm using the EE SIM recommend by Greg and Rob from "Pack the van and go", this hopefully gets round the fair usage problem.

I've not tried it yet with iPlayer but is working well in Spain (so far).

Does it work with Netflix on line when you don’t have it as a smart add on? Ie. Does it give you a uk IP address? Please let me know if you manage to get iPlayer and BBC Sounds.

Just tried it, iPlayer on an Amazon Fire stick, I am now watching BBC1 live while sat in southern Spain. I don't have Netflix sorry.

Have you had any ‘fair usage’ issues with longer stays?
You could watch this video, in the comments I asked Rob for a link to the package he used. I suggest you follow his link and read for yourself. You could possible ask Greg or Rob in their Video's comments section about their experience, both have always answered my questions.

I live in France and have a tplink router with sfr Sim in my van. I use UK expat VPN. It works fine on my phone and on the firestick but can never get it to work on my win10 laptop. Have contacted their help desk and tried various things all to no avail. Things I have tried include clearing cache, browsing history, removing any previous VPN software, allowing it through the firewall. Have run out of ideas unless anyone here can think of what will help. When I connect to the VPN it immediately turns off my wifi on the laptop.

From wht you post it seems the server which your wifi router uses is the problem
BUT just GUESSING
Make sure your windows is up to date ?

Thanks for your reply. Yes I have updated Windows. I have the same problem on the laptop wherever I am connected to wifi whether at home on sfr fibre optic or on my girlfriend's orange WiFi. It always turns off my WiFi straight away.

A very strange problem!
Antivirus or the like on the laptop ? (spyware malware windows defender ?
I have been advised with other vPN s to do this
you have isolated the problem it seems
Try another laptop ? or PC ?
Drive to a macdonalds and try their wifi
Try tethering your laptop too your phone !
