Got a Victron Smart Controller looking after 360w of solar but needed to know what was happening with the Lithium battery. Its got Bluetooth but its a bit basic so decided to add a Smart Shunt. So all my cables have 8mm ends but the Smart Shunt uses 10mm bolts. 🤬 Nothing is straightforward. Got to play around with cable ends now or make up an adaptor to fit.

I believe that the standard version of the Victron Smart Shunt can cope with up to 500A so hence the big bolts. Having bought many Victron units including 4 shunts, 4 inverter chargers and 7 MPPT controllers I am very impressed with the Victron quality and design. The Bluetooth and online communication via Victron Connect make monitoring so easy.

The 10mm bolts are annoying. You can understand why that size if using to the full rates capacity but I bet very very few, especially in the leisure vehicle area, come anywhere close to 500A draw. It would be good if they brought out a smaller - so cheaper :) - 250A version with 8mm bolts. I'd go for those instead of the 4 BMVs I have currently fitted

David possibly pointing this out to Victron may be of use. They may even be able to offer some type of adaptor if that’s possible in future. It seems this may well simply be an oversight on their part.

Just put a bus bar on both ends and make it yourself from scrap 5mm I ued 10mm ally . But I go to scrap yards ! And have angle grinder and drill
ally ÂŁ1.50 per kilo
Or fill sqaure with hot lead / solder and leave to harden may be ?

I have "hinted" to them the limitations of their shunt offerings generally. There is a company called Simarine (think in Czech Republic or Slovakia) that make a great range of monitoring kit, including things like quad-shunts so you can monitor 4 circuits with a single unit. This is part of the PICO range, but doesn't have the overall monitoring capability that Victron do. But if you could put the two together ......

Ref Adaptors
I have not used anything like this in the past, but I might try as it looks like it could be quite handy ... M10 to M8 adaptor.

This may have the wrong thread pitch in this example, but shows this kind of adapter is likely out there. Would be handy if Victron included a couple as they must be pennies to do in bulk.
