9 night first time Motorhome Scotland

Hi,

Re my post in the introductions: we are heading to Scotland mid August for 9 nights.

As it's our first time in a motorhome, so we've (so far) pre-booked a couple of stops. We've hired an Autoroller 694.

Night 1 Moffat c & camping park - seems like an easy place to get to and park in for the first night, and only 90 mins from home. Give me time to get to know the MH.
Night 2 Rothiemurch - It's in the woods, which my 8yr old son (and me too) is excited about, again seems an easy place to reach.

We then plan to head right up to the Durness area. We've done Scotland lots of time, but have never managed much time around the top north west coast. So from night 3, so far, nothing booked. We thought maybe Sango sands for a night (or any other place in the area that you recommend?), then make our way down towards Skye.

We thought a 2-3 nights of Wild camping nights on the way to Skye.

Anyone know of good places/recommendations between Durness and Skye - and on Skye itself?

Thanks.

HI I DO HOPE YOU ENJOY your first outing... if you become a full member then you can have access to POIs which have thousands of useful bits of info in them... parking places, toilets, taps, etc etc its a really useful resource and the first night you wild for free you will have recouped the £20 !!

Enjoy.

I have stayed at Rothiemurchus many times, lovely place with excellent shower block. You can walk into the Lairig Ghru, or it is a 15 minute walk into Aviemore. We usually go in Winter though, so be aware, there may be Midges about!

Durness is great with a great beach next to Sango Sands, but also visit Balnakiel just up the road, miles of sandy beach.

I would also recommend Applecross, although (some say) the drive over the pass isn't for the faint hearted. (You can always drive around the coast road instead).

Thanks for the replies so far, much appreciated.
I'll sort out full membership asap.

Forgot to add. My son really wants to see Whales & Dolphins. I've warned him that it's not that easy, but I believe that the west coast is probably the best place - outside of the islands. Any suggestions for a good spot to possibly spot?

Thanks.

Stoer Head Lighthouse

Very windy, but that would equal exciting.

Smallish car park but there are signs saying that all manner of ocean creatures have been spotted from here.

chanonry point on the black isle is a great place to spot dolpins just north of inverness

You do have the right idea of the best areas to cover but may not get chance to do all that without feeling your always on the road, i know i have done it chasing the good weather :)

If you do get that far North, Sandwood Bay is worth the 8 mile walk too and you can stay at the John Muir trust Car park that has a tap at the rear.

Not sure if your aware of these sites but they may help.

Sandwood Bay (Walkhighlands)

Also, if you like the mountains, dont forget the Torridon, Red Point Beach View point is a brilliant wild camp.

Have a great time, off there myself in a couple of weeks.

Fort George on the Moray Firth is good for dolphins and just a couple of hours drive from Aviemore.

Hi,

We did our first wild camping tour last year with the help of this website and here are some of the places we stayed at some fab places, all of which we found via the POI on this website. I have a PDF of the place i visited but i can't managed to upload it. I will email it if you would like a copy - just PM me your email and all send it to you.

Thanks.

Is overnight allowed here?

No signs forbidding it.
There were two other vans the night we stayed.
Lighthouse is unmanned, and a holiday cottage to rent.
Just don't park on top of the septic tank next to the grub hut! Or the angry lady will hammer on your door.

If its your first time in a mh, just make sure you keep your fuel topped up as garages get a bit scarce up the nw side, first time out with our first mh we went up to JOG across the top and down the nw, thinking there would still be plenty of garages, nearly got caught out.

Hi,

Not sure how to PM you?

So we're not on the road all the time, we'll hope to settle somewhere for at least two consecutive nights; somewhere going south between Durness and Skye.

We thought maybe around the Lochinver area?

Does this sound good, or would you recommend another area? Either wild or campsite.

Thanks.

We stayed here the other night , a great spot with views. hopefully you havent got this too late. we also weighted the bin lid down with a rock as it flaps about in the wind and that probably why there is so much rubbish ( none when i left :) )

Thanks again for all the help, much appreciated.

We're going mid August, and in the high season, how busy do these wild spots get?
